Description: Basil belongs to the Lamiaceae (Labiatae} family of plants. Although basil originally comes from Africa, the plant is relatively easy to grow, flourishing in the areas around the Mediterranean in particular. There are several different varieties of the plant however much of the basil that is grown for essential oil production comes from Egypt.
Color: Pale yellow to amber color liquid.
Common Uses: This variety of Basil contains a high Linalool content which is considered to be more therapeutic. In aromatherapy Basil is considered to be both soothing and uplifting. It can be used in massage therapy to alleviate tension and stress, generally lifting the spirits and promoting a sense of well being. Basil is said to clear the sinuses, and is a favored treatment for many respiratory ailments. When applied in dilution Basil acts as an insect repellent and may be used to relieve insect bites and stings.

Sweet vaguely anise-like minty smoky odor.
History: There are many rituals and beliefs associated with basil. The ancient Egyptians believed that it would open the gates of heaven for a person passing on European lore sometimes claims that basil is a symbol of evil.
Cautions: Basil oil can be a skin irritant. It should be used in dilution, and avoided during pregnancy.
