It has conspicuous oil glands that release a strong, blackcurrant-like aroma. The delicate stem bears five-petalled white flowers with purple anthers that appear in the spring. Color: Golden Brown Common Uses: Buchu essential oil has an antiseptic action on the urinary system and is beneficial to inflammation of the urethra, and cystitis and mild prostatitis, and other bladder problems. It is a useful diuretic, possibly aiding conditions such as rheumatism and arthritis, helping the body remove excess toxins and fluid. Used for water retention and aids weight loss and cellulite. It is used to reduce the inflammation of painful joints, especially sprains (compress). Consistency: Medium Note: Middle Strength of Aroma: Strong Blends well with: Cedarwood, frankincense, ginger, jasmine lavender, lemon, neroli, orange, palmarosa, patchouli, rosewood, sandalwood, ylang-ylang. Aromatic Scent:Buchu oil has a distinctive scent that is described as minty and fruity. Sulfurous, green, minty, cooling camphoraceous, sweet, fruity, dirty, berry, musty, catty, with vegetative and fruity nuances of peach and apricot. Because it has a flavor similar to black currants, buchu frequently is used to give beverages, foods, or pharmaceuticals a fruit flavor History:The indigenous people first introduced buchu as a medicinal plant to the European settlers at the Cape. The use of the plant subsequently spread to Europe and America where it was used extensively as a medicine. In 1821 buchu was included in the British Pharmacopoeia as a diuretic. Very little buchu is cultivated; most of the world’s supply is obtained from bushes that grow wild in the Cedarberg Mountains of South Africa. Cautions:Avoid during pregnancy. Can be over stimulating on the kidneys. Use with caution due to the pulegone content.
