Certified Organic Dried Botanicals
Our customers keep asking for more certified organic products and we’re responding. You’re going to see a considerable increase in the varieties we offer in every area including essential oils, carrier oils, extracts and soap additives. It’s going to be easier than ever to create products touting organic ingredients helping you capture new markets or simply enjoying your own creations at home and sharing them with friends and family.
We’ve chosen the USDA National Organics Program (NOP) as the primary certification body for all of our organic products. The NOP develops, implements, and administers production, handling, and labeling standards for organic agricultural products. The NOP also accredits the certifying agents (foreign and domestic) who inspect organic production and handling operations to certify that they meet USDA standards.
What is it that the certifying bodies look for before granting certification? It is things like:
avoidance of most synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. fertilizer, pesticides, antibiotics, food additives, etc), genetically modified organisms, irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge;
use of farmland that has been free from chemicals for a number of years (often, three or more);
keeping detailed written production and sales records (audit trail);
maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products
They also perform regular inspections and audit the producers and handlers to ensure compliance with all of the standards and revoke the certifications of those who fail to conform.
What it means to the purchaser is that they can be confident that the products they are buying are produced using methods that are closely scrutinized and monitored by third parties. The producers who gain certification are ones that have put a lot of time and effort into their operations and exhibit a real dedication to providing goods that meet strict standards. Consumers automatically know that the product is coming from a source that can be trusted and that means a lot. Of course, meeting the standards imposed by NOP means that operating costs are necessarily higher and results in a higher selling price, but this is something that the market has shown it is willing to accept. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.
