
Botanical Name: Chenopodium ambrosiode Plant Part: Fruits & Leaves Extraction Method: Steam Distillation Origin: Russia Description: A coarse, perennial weed of the roadside and waste places, smooth more or less viscid-glandular, the stout, erect, angular and grooved stem growing to a height of about 2 feet. Chenopodium essential oil is obtained by distillation from the crushed fruits & leaves of Chenopodium ambrosioides, var. anthelminticum. Color: Colorless to pale yellow when freshly distilled turning deeper yellow to brown through use. Common Uses: One of the most efficient but disagreeable tasting of anthelmintics, being especially useful for the removal of ascarides or roundworms. It is also diaphoretic, diuretic and expectorant. Because of its efficacy, ease of administration and low toxicity, this essential oil is perhaps the most valuable of all the vermifuge remedies. This essential oil contains a high percentage (60 to 65 percent) of ascaridol, an unstable alcohol readily decomposed on heating, with the production of a hydrocarbon. It also contains para-cymene and possibly sylvestrene. Consistency: Light Note: Top Strength of Aroma: Strong Blends well with: Does not blend well with any other essential oils. Aromatic Scent: Chenopodium essential oil has a Penetrating, camphor-like odor, and a bitter, burning taste. History: Also known as American Wormseed oil, its traditional use has been to treat round worms. The American aborigines used the whole herb in decoction in painful menstruation, but its principal use has been as a vermifuge, and it is to day considered one of the best expellants of lumbricoids.
