Clove Stem Essential Oil

Botanical Name: Eugenia Caryophyllata
Plant Part: Stem
Extraction Method: Steam
Origin: Indonesia
Description: Clove is derived from the tree Syzgium aromaticum. It is a slender evergreen that grows up to 12 meters in height (approximately 36 feet) and grows best in a warm humid tropical climate. Clove stem oil is obtained from dried peduncles and stem of clove buds (5-7%) on steam distillation. The eugenol content of the oil ranges from 90-95 per cent.
Color: Pale yellow to yellow clear liquid.
Common Uses: Clove Stem essential oil is an effective agent for minor pains and aches (particular dental pain), and is helpful when battling flu and colds. It is also considered to be antiseptic, diuretic, emmenagogue and an insect repellent.
Consistency: Medium
Note: Middle
Strength of Aroma: Medium to Strong
Blends well with: Citronella, grapefruit, lemon, orange, peppermint, rosemary, and rose.
Aromatic Scent: Clove Stem essential oil possesses a coarser and woodier odor than bud oil.
History: The word clove comes from the Latin word clavus, meaning nail, since the shaft and head of the clove bud resembles a nail. Cloves and nutmeg were among the most precious of items of Europe of the 16th and 17th centuries, and they were worth more than their weight in gold.
Cautions: Clove Stem oil can cause sensitization in some and should be used in dilution. It should also be avoided during pregnancy.

They say of the five senses, memory is triggered best by the sense of smell. When I was a very little girl, my grandfalther would boil cloves in a pot of water on the stove and I loved the scent that filled the house. When I saw the clove EO at such a remarkable price with New Directions, I tried some on a whim. It's wonderful. Thank you for the memory!

I was intrigued by this new product and eager to save a few dollars so ordered it. For me, that was a mistake. I am not at all fond of the fragrance, which seems harsh, rough (as in "unsmooth") and somewhat woodsy to me in a way clove bud does not. I bought it for therapeutic purposes, though, not its aroma so I'm hoping that it will suffice. I'll have to remind myself next time, though, that you get what you pay for, eh? This is NOT to say it's not a good product -- I am sure it is. Just that I was personally disappointed in the aroma. I am new to New Directions and LOVE the company and everything I've encountered about it so far. So incredibly professional. Almost overkill on packaging. Very pleased.
