Description: Cocoa is the dried and fully fermented fatty seed of the cacao tree. Our Cocoa Absolute is solvent extracted from top quality standardized cocoa bean powder.

Color: Dark brown liquid.

Common Uses: Cocoa is known to contain valuable anti-oxidants and is reported to assist with sluggish circulation as well as promoting softer, more youthful skin. Anti-oxidants aid in protecting the cells, collagen and elastin from damage caused by free radicals found in our environment. Cocoa has also been used throughout history as an aphrodisiac. This may be due to the positive effects of flavonols - active constituents naturally found in cacao. Cocoa Absolute is perfect for addition to creams, lotions, facial masks and body treatments.

History: The cacao plant was first given its botanical name by Swedish natural scientist Carolus Linnaeus in his original classification of the plant kingdom, who called it Theobroma ("food of the gods") cacao. The cacao tree is native to the Americas and was considered an important commodity in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Spanish chroniclers of the conquest of Mexico by Hernán Cortés relate that when Montezuma II, emperor of the Aztecs, dined he took no other beverage than chocolate.

Cautions: No known toxicity. Use well diluted. High doses may trigger skin reactions in sensitive individuals. It is important to note that all absolutes are extremely concentrated by nature. They should not be evaluated in this state unless you are accustomed to the undiluted fragrance. For those trying Absolutes for the first time, we strongly recommend they be evaluated in dilution. Otherwise, the complexity of the fragrance - particularly the rare and exotic notes - becomes lost.

Smells like baking. The scent is very light and takes a lot more than other absolutes to get a scent. I don't know if it was just me, or this particular batch, but after a month this absolute got kind of "chunky" and was no longer useable in products. Would not purchase again.

This is a very strong cocoa scent. It's not actually sweet or nearly as pleasant as you'd imagine chocolate to smell, so you'd need other fragrances to add to it if you were trying to go for a chocolate smell. If you're looking for that, I'd recommend using the chocolate fragrance oil NDA smells, which is marvelous. This is more useful for therapeutic benefits.

I purchased a few synthetic chocolate fragrances in the past before I had discovered cocoa absolute, and was always disappointed in how no one could nail a true chocolate scent. Then I found this, and my search came to an end. This stuff is dark, rich, smooth and sexy. I even gave 5 ml. bottles out as gifts to some registered aromatherapists I know, and they were floored that something like cocoa absolute existed and they didn't know about it. A total hit! It's important to note that cocoa absolute is water soluble.

This is a very concentrated dark chocolate smell, although it is not especially bitter it does need a little sweetening, in my opinion. Benzoin and vanilla worked really well to bring out the best dark chocolate truffle scent I have ever encountered. Hands down my favorite scent.
