Skinflint (Megan) caught my attention at SD when she mentioned she loves to use urea in lotions as it's a fab skin softener. i figure if she mentions it it HAS to be good! so i ordered some and have tested it in my lotion. WOW! i'd been slapping my lotion on my elbows which have been unusually dry. without urea, i THOUGHT my lotion was pretty good but for really dry skin like elbows and knees it just didn't do the job. with the urea, in 2 days, my elbows were smooth as silk! an added bonus, with my particular formula, it gives a better glide and drier after-feel. woot! another added bonus, it's cheap! note this is regular ol' "urea", not the diaz..whatever urea stuff.

anyway, thanks megan, as always, for your good advice! i sure do appreciate it. and i highly recommend the stuff for the skin. i'm using 5% in my lotion right now for my testers...

have a good day!

Urea is a great humectant, and it is naturally present in healthy skin.
However,
"Despite their potent moisturizing properties, commercially viable cosmetic preparations containing urea are difficult to formulate. In aqueous systems, urea hydrolyzes steadily, such that, in less time than an ordinary product shelf-life, significant quantities of ammonia, other amines and carbon dioxide have formed in the product.

...Amines have a distinct, unpleasant odor and tend to raise the pH of the composition. ... Discoloration or other breakdown of the product, including phase separation, may also occur as a result of the hydrolysis of urea in an aqueous composition. This is completely unacceptable in personal care products."
