Hi everyone, I have been reading about Essential Oils and have found out that some of them are not safe. Does anyone know which EO's are safe to put in soap and which are not. I am looking for a good book on EO and have not found one yet that I feel is what I need. Thanks for the help. _________________ May The Light Of God Shine On All Your Hopes And Dreams.

Here's a good place to play.
Put in a couple of oils and it will give you some formulas, it will tell you if it is safe in soap too.
Now, having said that ... you will want to pick up some aromatherapy books and some essential oil books so that you know what these very expensive and incredible oils can do. _________________ Too blessed to be stressed! |

I have a question about essential oils.
What are the best types (not suppliers or brands).
There are just SO many, it boggles my mind - and to smell them in person does precious little for me - scents are not my forte - and of course they smell much different in a condensed form than they do in soap.
I have used Lavender 40/42 and don't like it, but there are others like bulgarian, etc.,
And chammomile - which type is best?
Eucalyptus - different types, Of course I want the nice ones, not the cheap ones.
What are your preferences?? |

Thanks Gypsyprincess! Great links - I think I found them before, and likely printed them off (I'm a "paper ho" - I print everything!!)
Scents confuse me - and as I mentioned, I am not a fan of FO's or expesive perfumes. I'm advocating for a "scent free" environment in my workplace (call me a bit*h) I can't handle it - I have such a headache at the end of the day.
So you see, I'm EO challenged. And with SO many different varieties - I get overwhelmed. Like a kid in a candy store - TOO many choices.
And it does me no good to smell them - 'cause they all really stink to me Some are nice - once they are in soap / lotions.
I typically make unscented soaps - the scented few that I do make - have a hiding place to cure - WAY out of my sniffer range. |

You're welcome, Caz!
I have posted the links before but I had no idea in which thread, so I did it again for you! I take a few things into account when choosing an essential oil - what I need it for/want it to do and whether I like the smell - everyone's different, so its personal preference a lot of the time! If you don't like strong smells, what about top note essential oils (for example the citrus oils) which are pleasant but not overpowering...
Since working with pure essential oils I have found unpure fragrances (and particularly commercial perfumes and aftershaves) make me sick too; they give me a headache. Of course, that doesn't go down well with my husband now as he has used a particualr fragrance (commercial) for years and is exasperated it gives me a headache if he wears it cos 'all the other women' like it! I can't convert him sadly!
Some cleaning products make me feel sick too (good excuse not to do it sometimes!) Anyone any suggestions for 'natural' stuff which works? (sorry if I'm going off original topic ) I use some essential oils, but wondered if anyone had any suggestions for any products they know of/use which work? _________________ Sharon

Didn't know where else to post this ...
Why is it that my one bottle of Pink Grapefruit EO is much lighter in color than my newer one - which is quite dark.
My Lemongrass had what appeared to be "sediment" in the bottom of it.
And ... is there any better way to pour EO's from the bottle - gosh, I have wasted so much all over my counter!!
Shaking it out takes forever, removing the little cap thingy and pouring results in lots of waste - any suggestions? Wondering if removing the cap thingy and using a pipette might work better.
Any suggestions from the pros?
p.s. I have tried the straw method and it didn't work. I hate wasting my precious EO's |

The straw method of pouring EO's doesn't work for me. If I need a small amount, I use a pipette. _________________ Irena

Thank you Irena!
I will try the pipettes.
I don't make batches any larger than 3lbs. finished so I only need to measure small amounts under 2 oz. I think that's the best idea. |

This is a little late but I use d-limonene with either alcohol or vinegar and water and some EOs. Works surprisingly well. You can just shake it up or use some poly-20 to emulsify the d-limonene.
I get it from www.greenterpene.com. They're located in Florida, land of the orange, LOL! _________________ "There never was a good war or a bad peace." -Benjamin Franklin |

You asked about cleaning without a lot of chemicals. I can't use a lot of stuff because of the scenting either. I have gone to all microfibre cloths for cleaning with just water. It works wonderfully well. You have to launder them without anything that makes lint and no fabric softener, to keep the cloths working well. We now do not use window cleaners, floor cleaners, sprays. We do have some more natural products for scrubbing the toilet, the shower, the sinks and stuff, but not the stinky stuff anymore.
I found they went hand-in-hand with making our own soap and reading labels about what's in things. _________________ Debra |
