INCI: Glycerin
Description: Vegetable glycerin is the result of a sophisticated extraction method called Hydrolysis, with the final product being referred to as Vegetable Glycerin. This system is based on the fats and oils of a raw product (typically palm or coconut) that are then split into crude glycerol fats, under the combined action of water, temperature and pressure. These temperatures can exceed 400° degrees and the material is usually kept under pressure for 20-30 minutes. What is actually occurring is a sort of counter-flow where the water absorbs glycerol from the fatty acid phase of the oil production. After this phase this glycerol is isolated and further distilled to give buyers a standard 99% Glycerin product (our New Directions Variety is actually 99.5%).
Vegetable Glycerin is a clear, colorless, and odorless liquid. It is used as an agent in cosmetics, toothpaste, shampoos, soaps, herbal remedies, pharmaceuticals, and other household items. Because it is soluble in both, water and alcohol, its versatility is a major benefactor in its purported growth and popularity within the manufacturing sector. It is invaluable as a natural source ingredient with emollient like properties which can soften and soothe the skin and it assists the outer epidermis to retain moisture. This helps to explain why it is one of the most popular cosmetic additives used today.

I add about 1 part glycerin to 5 parts (by volume) of the unscented bubble bath concentrate to make a very nice bubble bath. The glycerin seems to make the bubbles last somewhat longer and also imparts a very slight blue haze to the bath water. It works great in the Jacuzzi bath tub.
My other use of the glycerin is to make an electric pre-shave with it. Because glycerin is slippery and completely water soluble it doesn't require shaking before use or a "solubilizer". If your shaver can be rinsed under water it rinses clean because there are no insoluble oils.
My personal formula is (by volume):
6 parts 91% rubbing alcohol
2 parts Witch Hazel
2 parts Glycerin
menthol (crystals) to your preference in strength

I like that it is guaranteed vegetable glycerin and I also like the price. I am certainly not a glycerin-connesieur (since I can't even spell that!) but I do know that this glycerin works great for all my products, and that's all that matters!

I use this product in making salt scrubs and bath salts as it blends well with carrier and essential oils. Leaving a nice smooth, yet not greasy feel to the skin. It is clear and odorless, with an indefinite shelf life.
