Processing Conditions for Liquid Organic Soap

Stephenson Description: A natural liquid soap base that simply requires the addition of fragrance and color.

Stephenson Liquid Organic Soap features:
A true liquid soap.
Contains no surfactants.
Vegetable origin.
Has a natural clear pale amber color.
Requires only the addition of fragrance and color.

Why use Stephenson Liquid Organic Soap:
There are many skin cleansing preparations available and many are sold as 'Soap'. This may be misleading as true soap is the product derived from natural oil and fats. Some 'Soaps' are in fact synthetic detergents and may be derived from crude petroleum. Even detergents derived from 'natural' fatty alcohols are far from 'natural'. So called 'natural' fatty alcohols certainly use natural fatty oils or fats as starting materials but they are then heavily processed to convert them to alcohols. The alcohols are then further reacted chemically with things like ethylene oxide and sulphuric acid. The end products are far from natural and they certainly aren't soap!
Synthetic detergents have been around for about 80 years and have been used in personal care products for much less that that, about 50 years. Soaps have a slightly longer track record in personal care having been used for at least 2000 years. In this time there has been little or no evidence of adverse skin reaction to soap. Contrast this with the 50 year track record of synthetic detergents; adverse reactions such as eczema are well documented and not exactly uncommon.
So how is soap made? Fatty oils are heated with a neutralizing alkali such as sodium hydroxide for solid soap or potassium hydroxide for liquid soap. A reaction takes place in which the alkali is neutralized by the oil to produce soap and glycerine is split off from the oil. In our organic liquid castille soap the glycerine is left in the soap where it is available to act as a moisturizing humectant. and that’s it; no further processing, no high energy chemical reactions, no toxic ethylene oxide, no corrosive sulphuric acid.

Processing Notes:

Some essential oils do not mix perfectly with a natural soap base. These may include lemon, lemongrass, clove, eucalyptus, and possibly others. Test carefully when using these oils. Orange oils and other essential oils may leave the mixture and float on top if too much is used. Warm and stir to get them back in. Wait 24 hours to check for separation. Skim excess from top if needed. Any oil-based or water-based herbal ingredient can potentially be used.

* Gently stir the base while adding the other additives.
* Always test a small sample BEFORE moving on to larger amounts.
* Base and additives should be at about the same temperature.
* Always stir up from the bottom, and be sure the base is homogenous before adding other ingredients. Keep an eye out for layering within the liquid.
* Let mixture sit for at least 48 hours to check for separation.
* Liquid Organic Soap: Some essential oils do not mix perfectly with a natural soap base. These may include lemon, lemongrass, eucalyptus, and possibly others. Test carefully when using these oils. Any oil-based or water-based herbal ingredient can potentially be used.

I've been using this natural (and historical) soap for years. Thank you ND for offering an alternative to the toxic products out there! The more people using these types of things the more we can get the word out about what's really in the drugstore. I don't add colour but I do add essential oils... rosemary, peppermint, lavender, nice. A comment for Pam (read below): The soap gellified on me too and I realized if I added less essential oil it wouldn't happen. I add about 45 drops essential oil to 250ml soap. I'm sure it does depend on the types of essential oil so you'll have to try it for yourself.

My friend and I have been experimenting with the problem of the soap turning to gel with the addition of essential oils. So far, we've found that bergamot, sweet orange dark, and frankincense do not pose this problem. Also, we tried mixing oils that do turn the soap to gel with a touch of soya bean oil before adding it to the soap. This solved the problem and the soap still lathered very well with no oily residue.

I really like this soap base. I've been looking for something without chemicals and harsh preservatives that I can use as a multipurpose soap and as a shampoo base. This was fantastic. I used a small amount to test as a shampoo and it had an amazing lather and my hair felt moisturized, yet not greasy, which has been my problem with many natural shampoos.

Terrific soap, truly love the way it feels. BUT - it does NOT scent with Essential Oils. I have tried several. I even called ND and they simply replied "We don't know what to tell you - except that it doesnt take EO's well". Hmm...well then why is the product description: "A natural liquid soap base that simply requires the addition of fragrance and color". I guess I will just sell it as unscented.

This is a lovely soap base, very moisturizing. Takes FOs easily. Interestingly, the soap turned completely to gel with the addition of peppermint EO...

I loved this soaps lather and the fact that it did not leave hands feeling dry, but was suprised when lavender essential oil would not blend into it. The essential oil stayed beaded throughout the soap never truly blending in. I did have success with tea-tree and peppermint and have not tried any others as of yet

Found this product to be a little more harsh than other liquid soaps I have tried. Scents easily and lathers great.

This is a fabulous product! I am extremely impressed with how well it takes and holds scent, not to mention the great foaming power. Very gentle, non drying...a real winner!! Was very pleased to see that you had changed the packaging format for the 1kg quantity from white HDPE jar to HDPE 1 L botte -- much more convenient.
