My mother-in-law gets really bad arthritis and loves it when I make a cooling spritz for her (by dissolving menthol crystals in denat. alcohol, then blending that solution with distilled or peppermint floral water). However, people should be warned that this is the most invasive-smelling stuff ever. I double-bagged the crystals with Ziplocs and put them in my soaping box, and EVERYTHING, including my beeswax, cocoa butter, and all my powders absorbed the menthol smell, despite being separated and sealed within their own Ziploc bags. Wicked stuff, and it works wonders, but my advice is to store it at the opposite end of your home, away from anything you don't want smelling minty-fresh.
