Volatile oils (0.3%) contains aliphatic hydrocarbons, mono- and sesquiterpenes such as caryophyllene, methyl-2-octane, n-nonane, n-octanal, n-decanal, α-pinene and ß-pinene,
2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, traces of limonene and myrcene, undecane, dodecanol and the prenylate phloroglucine derivative hyperforin (2%)

6. Reactivity/Stability Data:

Reactivity: Stable.

Decomposition: When heated to decomposition produces sulfur fumes and carbon monoxide smoke.

 

7. Toxicological Properties/Information:

May cause increased sensitivity to sunlight. Other side effects can include anxiety, dry mouth, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, headache, or sexual dysfunction.
Hypericin can accumulate in the nucleus of cells and directly bind to DNA therefore pregnant or nursing women or children should avoid St. John's wort.
Persons with severe liver or kidney disease, bipolar dispoder (manic-depressive disease) or Alzheimer’s disease and children should avoid St. John’s Wort.

St John’s Wort will interact with drugs such as:
Antidepressant drugs, including MAO inhibitors, SSRIs, and tricyclics; or possibly the drugs tramadol or sumatriptan (Imitrex), Digoxin, cyclosporine, protease inhibitors or reverse transcriptase inhibitors (for HIV infection), oral contraceptives, tricyclic antidepressants, Coumadin (warfarin), statin drugs (used for high cholesterol), theophylline, chemotherapy drugs, newer antipsychotic medications (such as olanzapine and clozapine), sulfa drugs and the anti-inflammatory medication Feldene (piroxicam), as well as Prilosec (omeprazole) or Prevacid (lansoprazole).

8. Preventive Data:

Spillage: Absorb spills, cover with an inert, non-combustible, inorganic absorbent material, and remove to an approved disposal container.

Fire: Recommended extinguishing media – CO2, foam and dry chemicals. DO NOT use direct water jet on burning material.

Environment: Keep away from drains, surface and ground water.

Storage: Store in cool (ideally 15 – 25 °C), dry and well ventilated area protected in tightly closed container away from sources of ignition, heat and sunlight. Keep air contact to minimum.

 

9. First Aid Measures:

Eye contact: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Call physician if irritation persists.

Inhalation: Avoid casual breathing. Remove to fresh air.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth and consult a physician immediately. Never-give anything by mouth if victim is unconscious, is rapidly-losing consciousness, or is convulsing.

Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash with soap and plenty of water.

 

11. Individual Protection:

Use safety glasses.

Avoid breathing in product by ensuring good ventilation when handling.

Avoid skin contact by using chemical resistant gloves and overall.
