Decomposition: When heated to decomposition, the smoke may contain carbon monoxide and residual zinc.

 

7. Toxicological Properties/Information:

TWA (crystalline silica) = 2 mg/m3

TWA (talc dust) =  30 mg/m3

Acute irritant – small particles will irritate skin and eyes. Inhalation of large amounts may cause pulmonary edema and irritation to upper respiratory tract; tickling cough is a common symptom. Do not ingest.

Chronic exposure: may cause talcosis, pulmonary fibrosis and silicosis.

Studies link talc with pulmonary issues, ovarian cancer, and lung cancer. However, no conclusive study has yet been made to determine either the toxicity and/or carcinogenic nature of talc and the long history of safe use suggests that these concerns are unfounded.

Note: The FDA considers non-asbestiform talc, i.e. talc which DOES NOT contain carcinogenic asbestos fibers, and with less than 1% crystalline silica, to be Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use in cosmetics.

 

8. CAUTION:

ACUTE IRRITANT! MAY CAUSE RESPIRATORY HAZARDS, AFFECT EYES AND LUNGS.

 

9. Preventive Data:

Spillage: Absorb spills, cover with an inert, non-combustible, inorganic absorbent material, and remove to an approved disposal container.

Fire: Recommended extinguishing media – CO2, foam and dry chemicals. DO NOT use direct water jet on burning material.

Environment: Keep away from drains, surface and ground water.

Storage: Store in cool, dry, well ventilated area protected in tightly closed container away from sources of ignition, heat and light or direct sunlight. Keep air contact to minimum.

 

10. First Aid Measures:

Eye contact: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Call physician if irritation persists.

Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Avoid casual breathing.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth and consult a physician immediately. Never-give anything by mouth if victim is unconscious, is rapidly-losing consciousness, or is convulsing.

Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash with soap and plenty of water.

 

11. Individual Protection for Industrial:

Always use a safety goggles.

Handle in a well ventilated area, and avoid breathing in dust directly by using a mask.

Always avoid skin contact with concentrated product by wearing a lab overall and chemical resistant or surgical gloves.
