Myrrh Essential Oil (India)

Average Product Rating: 4.3 / 5 (Based on 17 Customer Reviews)

Botanical Name: Commiphora myrrha

Plant Part: Resin

Extraction Method: Solvent Extraction

Origin: India

Description: Myrrh is a reddish resin collected from the short thorny tree of the Commiphora myrrha plant. The trunk exudes a natural oleoresin that hardens into what is classified as reddish brown "tears". Native collectors make incisions into the trees in order to increase the yield.

Color: Golden yellow to brown liquid.

Common Uses: Indian Myrrh Essential Oil contains a number of flavonoids which assist in reducing inflammation and boosts the immune system. It is also reputed to be valued as a tonic, and is said to have antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. Indian Myrrh Essential Oil is very aromatic and is thought to enhance spirituality. Aromatherapists use both Myrrh and Frankincense to draw on the deeply meditative and healing quality of the oils.

Consistency: Medium

Note: Middle

Strength of Aroma: Medium

Blends well with: Frankincense, Lavender, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Rose, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Tea Tree and Thyme.

Aromatic Scent: Myrrh Essential Oil has a warm, rich, spicy balsamic odor.

History: Known locally as “guggulu”, ancient Ayurvedic text prescribes Indian myrrh for easing coughs and chest complaints and skin infections. Myrrh was also widely used as protection against the plague. It is documented that the Egyptians were the first to use myrrh during worship and at funerals. The Parsees of northern India still use the resins in religious ceremonies: Myrrh symbolizes self-denial; Frankincense represents spirituality, and gold the wealth of humankind.

Cautions: Myrrh Essential Oil can be possibly toxic in high concentrations, and should not be used during pregnancy.

Usage Directions: Since this essential oil has a slightly thick consistency, We would recommend placing the bottle in a very hot water bath, changing the water frequently and once it is back to the liquid state be sure to shake before use.

I love the scent of this Myrrh, but like so many have said before me, it is VERY thick. I haven't been able to use it as often as I like due to it's viscosity. I thought about trying to blend it down just enough to make it easier to handle with a carrier, but I didn't know which carrier(probably one of the thinner ones, I'd imagine) or at what percentage to mix carrier vs. Myrrh. I'm still new to oils, so I guess it all comes down to experimentation! Everybody RUN! :-)

This myrrh isn't bad, but I definitely prefer the Egyptian one, which I find stronger, warmer, and longer lasting. Of note, I don't always find the more expensive variety of any given EO from this site to be better than other varieties, but in this case, I recommend splurging on the Egyptian variety, since it is such a versatile oil, blending well with almost everything.

Haven't really found a good use for this one yet. It's thick and kind of mediciney smelling. For the price I'd say it's a good addition to the aresenal though!

This EO has a subtle smell but it's very nice and smooth. As others have mentioned it is thick but you can work with it if you put the bottle in warm water and take the dropper tip out of the bottle opening.

Really thick – hard to get out of the bottle. Very little aroma. This oil did not want to mix with other oils when I tried to make concoction for my sore joints, but when I applied it by itself it gave nice warming feeling on my joints, and really helped.

I'm sad to say that this particular Myrrh wasn't as strong in scent as I had anticipated. Being from the Middle East I'm quite familiar with the scent and it's my favorite of all favorite scents. The product itself is incredible and I use it in alot in my skin and hair care line but if you are desireing a strong Myrrh scent I'd suggest making your own liquified Myrrh just to pump up the sweet smell. Glycerin A little bit of vodka to liquify the Myrrh Myrrh Shake daily and strain any excess bark and other material - the scent is quite strong and makes an incredible addition to your lotions and conditioners.

A true to form myrrh, but very thick. More reminiscent of myrrh resinoid. Would have been useful to know that. Can be blended well with essential oils, but needs some work to blend with carrier oils.

It smells great and I've used it a couple times but I couldn't get it out of the bottle until I took the dropper off and used my own eye dropper. It's really really thick.

This is a wonderful, warm Myrrh, love myrrh with ylang-ylang and a citrus. It is really very thick and perhaps a slightly different packaging would be better, if possible.
