Orange Essential Oil (Bitter)

Average Product Rating: 5 / 5 (Based on 13 Customer Reviews)

Botanical Name: Citrus aurantium

Plant Part: Fruit Peel

Extraction Method: Cold Pressed

Origin: Italy

Description: The Bitter Orange tree is an evergreen that grows up to 30 feet high with glossy dark green leaves and fragrant white flowers. The essential oil is produced by cold pressing of the peel. The Bitter Orange is native to southern China and North-Eastern India. Both the Bitter Orange and edible orange trees bear a great resemblance to each other, but their leaf stalks show a noticeable difference. The Bitter Orange is much broader in the shape of a heart.

Color: Yellowish to orange liquid.

Common Uses: The Bitter Orange Essential Oil has properties very similar to the Sweet Orange. They include the following properties: antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, carminative, cordial, deodorant, digestive, stimulant (nervous), tonic (cardiac, circulatory). Orange Bitter Essential Oil may be used in the same way as oil of turpentine in chronic bronchitis. It is non-irritant to the kidneys and been applied to combat colds, constipation, dull skin, flatulence, the flu, gums, slow digestion, and stress.

Consistency: Thin

Note: Top

Strength of Aroma: Medium

Blends well with: Lavender, Bergamot, Lemon, Clary Sage, Myrrh, Sandalwood, Nutmeg, Cinnamon Bark and Clove Bud.

Aromatic Scent: Orange Bitter Essential Oil has a very sweet citrus smell characteristic of Sweet Orange, while also carrying some of the bitterness of grapefruit.

History: There is some argument, but it is believed that Bitter Orange was brought to Europe by the Arabs in the First century along with the sweet orange.

Cautions: Bitter Orange Essential Oil is considered photo-toxic and exposure to sunlight should be avoided. Do not use if pregnant.

Smells juicy and natural, really lovely! Not bitter at all, although just a touch more "green" than the orange sweet dark. (Which ironically has more of a bitter peel note to it.) This is an incredibly versatile citrus oil, you'll want to add it to everything!

This is a very nice orange scent. Doesn't smell bitter. I like this even more than orange sweet 5 fold. I mix with petitgrain for a very nice Neroli like scent.

Outstanding true orange scent. I added a few drops to Mango Madness FO to make a unique clean smelling air freshener. It stepped down the sweetness in the FO.

This is for sure, by far, the best Orange eo I've ever smelled. I can't wait to try NewDirections other orange scents! As for the name Bitter Orange, it doesn't really have a bitterness to it, it's more sweet and refreshing,so don't let the word bitter fool you-I think tis is a scent everyone would love.

This is my favorite orange scent. I love the combination of sweet with the zing of peel--I find this more stimulating and uplifting than the other sweet orange oils (though they're also lovely).

My wife loves the smell of citrus fruits. When she opens the bottle, the fragrance scents the whole room. At work, she usually puts a couple drops on a tissue to lift her spirits. She is going to use some in the vehicle as an air freshner.

this is the best orange smell, and certainly not "bitter" at all. i think it would work better in perfumery than sweet orange, but that may be because i dont like scents that are too sweet.

I agree with Penny - I do not want the BITTER part of the name fool anyone either - honestly I feel that the Orange Sweet Dark has a more "bitter" scent to it, that having an essence of PEEL - this EO is very rich not as light a fresh although still very ORANGEY Fresh mind you ...it is just deep and rich and very heady for a fruit scent.
