Botanical Name: Elaeis guineensis

Description: Palm Kernel Carrier Oil is derived from the fully hydrogenated refined, bleached and deodorized (RBD) palm kernel oil. It is non-GMO and considered non–allergenic. There is often a lot of confusion over Palm Kernel Oil and Palm Oil. Both can be used interchangeably, but there are differences. Palm oil is derived from the palm fruit whereas Palm Kernel Oil comes from the kernel of the fruit.

In response to the growing concerns over the deforestation of the rainforests and non-regulated expansion, producers and users of Palm oil formed the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). The goal of this group is to develop a strategy, guideline, and even an inspection and certification system for Palm Plantations throughout the world. The objective is to be able to show that these certified Palm Plantations are in fact sustainable and are not practicing deforestation to expand their productivity. Our Palm oil come from approved suppliers of Palm Oil products and are members of this RSPO group.

Color: Clear when liquid, white to slightly pale yellow when solid.

Aromatic Description: Palm Kernel Carrier Oil has very little scent characteristic of most carrier oils.

Common Uses: Palm Kernel Carrier Oil is widely used in soap manufacturing to give great lather. It is also used to harden soaps and aid soap formulas to saponify quickly. Palm Kernel Carrier Oil has moisturizing and skin softening properties and can be used in skin care manufacturing.

Consistency: Solid at room temperature requiring heating for production.

Absorption: Palm Kernel Carrier Oil will leave an oily feeling on your skin if applied neat.

Shelf Life: Users can expect a shelf life of 1 to 2 years with proper storage conditions (cool, out of direct sunlight). Refrigeration after opening is recommended.

Bought this in bulk and it came in a pail bucket. The oil is solid, so you'd have to hack at it with some sort of instrument, etc. to derive pieces and flakes.... and then melt it, if you're using it for soap. The palm helps to make a nice hard soap bar. I particularly bought palm oil from NDA because it's from a sustainable source, at an affordable price. There's a place that sells it cheaper, but it isn't sustainable. Buying the oil from a sustainable source helps save forests and the animals they shelter (orangutans)! So do research before deciding to purchase ingredients for soaping... it can make a difference.

As with all of NDAs products, this is a high quality palm kernel oil. I found the packaging to be quite inconvenient. It came in one solid chunk in a very thin plastic jar that I couldn't heat up easily to melt the oil. I ended up cutting the whole jar apart and putting the solid block of oil in a plastic bag. It would be easier to handle if the jar did not have a lip, or if it came in a bag.
