Petitgrain Essential Oil (Italy)

Average Product Rating: 4.7 / 5 (Based on 24 Customer Reviews)

Main Constituents:
Linalyl acetate: 42%
Botanical Name: Petitgrain bigarde
Plant Part: Leaves and Twigs
Extraction Method: Steam Distilled
Origin: Italy
Description: Petitgrain bigarde is native to Southeast Asia. The tree now grows throughout the Mediterranean and sub-tropic areas worldwide. The bitter orange tree that provides the Petitgrain Essential Oil is also the source of Bitter Orange Oil and Neroli Oil.
Color: Colorless to pale yellow liquid.
Common Uses: Petitgrain Essential Oil is believed to have uplifting properties. Aromatherapists have long used it to calm anger and stress, while it has been used in the skin care industry for acne, oily skin, and as a deodorizing agent.
Consistency: Thin
Note: Top
Strength of Aroma: Strong
Blends well with: Bergamot, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Geranium, Lavender, Lime, Jasmine, Neroli, Orange, Palmarosa, Rosemary, Sandalwood and Ylang-ylang .
Aromatic Scent: Petitgrain Italy Essential Oil smells like orange blossoms with a bitter, floral, citrus and herbaceous undertone.
History: Originally the oil was produced in distilleries from the unripe oranges when they were the size of cherries. This explains why it is named Petitgrain – which in French means little grains. Nonetheless, this proved to be uneconomical and so the oil began being extracted from the leaves and twigs of the orange tree instead.
Cautions: Petitgrain Italy Essential Oil is generally non-toxic, non-irritant, non-sensitizing. Avoid use during pregnancy.

This smells exactly like a broken twig from an orange tree, citrusy but with bitter undertones that are not entirely pleasant. That said, the overall smell is not bad. I just find it hard to mix with other EOs and would use it more for its therapeutic properties than for its actual smell.

Fresh and herb-like...I'm not sure I like it alone but I think it would be great with the citrus oils.

There is just something about petitgrain that I am so addicted to!!! Maybe because of the refreshing notes, and everytime someone gets a whiff you hear, mmmmmmm.......Truely recommed this for every mixture.

I like initial herbaceous scent out of the bottle, but it smells like mustard or pickles to me. Would not purchase again.

I purchased this oil without knowing anything about it--just had a feeling that I needed it in my repertoire of oils. And, wow, am I glad to have it! As soon as I smelled it, I knew it was "MY" oil. It calms me and balances every extreme emotion.

Like neroli with a pop of galbanum or cypress or something else in the "green" family. Not a substitue, per se, especially not therapeutically, but an interesting change of pace for chypre and floral fragrances in need of some grassy qualities sans the incense or wood notes found in most "green" odors.

This EO has a nice strong fragragrance. It's harbaceous and slightly citrussy. Perfect for blending

I mixed Petitgrain with Peru Balsam and what a great aroma. I use this for my deodorant mixed in shea butter and it is wonderful. The best mix I have tried. I had only bought a small size now I am back to get a larger size.

I didnt smell oranges at all in this. More like green leaves with a citrus twist to them.

I mixed this with geranium in a body scrub and so far have gotten rave reviews, I will be buying a bigger bottle in the future.

Nice smell, but I don't know why everybody says it reminds them of neroli... not even close! Good value though

I picked up this EO on the recommendation of the last reviewer before me---can't wait to see how it blends!

For a beautiful scent combine this Petitgrain with the other essential oils in the Orange family - Neroli, Bergamot and Orange. The blend is a natural and uplifting scent for the diffuser or anything else you would like. This Petitgrain does have a beautiful scent all on its own as well.

Great fresh, green scent! I didn't like petitgrain when I first smelled it--too fresh and strong--but now I use it quite a bit (in deodorant blends, air fresheners, and uplifting blends).

I have not had substantial experience with Petitgrain, love the idea that it can mimic Neroli, for much less. Looking forward to finding more ways to use it. I enjoy reading the reviews for the ideas given Thanks NDA and everyone. With the price I could aford to experiment!!

Fantastic light, fresh, floral citrus aroma. I blend equal parts of Mandarin and Petitgrain to make a Neroli type aroma.

A fresh clean scent that is so easily used in blends. Citrusy with a bitter green airy tone. A must have! Thanks NDA!

One of my new favourite oils! I like the scent because it is not overly "sweet" and blends well with an earthy/woody toned oil. Fresh, clean scent when used in a burner.

Prior to ordering this essential oil, I was not familiar with petitgrain. I purchased it after reading the reviews left by other customers, and I am glad I did. I really like this oil, the scent is bright. Very enjoyable.

Lovely scent - widely used in perfumery. Do not expect a real orangy aroma - it is citrusy but much more green. Wonderful aroma. Great quality!

This oil is also one of my favorites.... if you don't have the money for neroli.....buy petitgrain. Ok, it's not the same vibrationally or any other way, but it comes from the leaves of the same tree, and the scent is very close yet a little more 'green'. I absolutely love this oil with a nice balsamic or woody scent (like sandalwood). Truly a beautiful treasure.

Exellent oil, reminds neroli, but more herbaceous.
