Rose Otto (Turkey) Essential Oil

Average Product Rating: 4 / 5 (Based on 2 Customer Reviews)
Main Constituents:
Citronellol: 31%
Geraniol: 22%
Botanical Name: Rosa Damascena p. Mill
Plant Part: Flowers
Extraction Method: Steam Distilled
Origin: Turkey
Description: The rose is one of the world’s best known flowers - stunning and exotic in both visual appearance and aroma.
Otto is a Bulgarian word for "oil". It’s used to differentiate the steam distilled from the absolute. The production of this oil is vary labor intensive; the flowers are carefully hand picked at a particular time of day, when the fragrance of the flower is at its strongest. Since the oil is steam distilled, it only contains the natural essences of the rose petals as opposed to solvent extracted that possibly contains minute amounts of hexane.
In aromatherapy the Rose Otto is more potent than the Rose Absolute, as it only needs a fraction of a percent to do wonders. The aroma of the oil grows intense as it ages if properly stored. When Rose Otto is cooled, it can congeal to a translucent soft mass which will liquefy by the warmth of the hand.
Rose is one of the most complex essential oils known. It contains more than 300 chemical compounds, of which the greater part is still unidentified. The comparison between the Rose Otto and Rose Absolute is clearly seen in the content of phenyl ethyl alcohol which is almost negligible in the Rose Otto. It is a water soluble constituent which is lost in the distillation process.
This oil may form white or clear crystals at a temperature of 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21° C) and may turn into an opaque paste consistency in much lower temperature, if this occurs, let your bottle sit in a warm bath and it will return the clear liquid consistency.
Color: Pale yellow
Common Uses: Aromatherapists credit Rose Otto as having uplifting, aphrodisiac and spirit balancing properties. The pleasing aroma of Rose Otto is great for meditation. This product is very common in perfumery and aromatic industries. It’s a good emollient and it’s excellent for skin preparation especially focusing on dry, sensitive and mature skin.
Consistency: Thin
Note: Top
Strength of Aroma: Strong
Blends well with: Bergamot, Chemomile Roman, Clary Sage, Frankincense , Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Melissa, Neroli, Patchouli, Palmarosa, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Ylang-Ylang
Aromatic Scent: A sweet rich floral aroma similar to the scent of the freshly picked flowers.
History: Turkey and Bulgaria are the biggest producers of pure rose oil, and because of their climate, the petals of the flowers do not over-produce wax. Approximately 4000 kilograms of petals are required to produce 1 kilogram of pure rose oil. The exotic nature and value were appreciated in ancient times by the Greeks, Chinese, Indians, Persians and Romans. All documentation indicates that their medical applications of the essential oil were identical to those that exist today.
Cautions: This oil should be avoided during the 1st trimester of pregnancy.

I have to admit that, considering the price and how wonderful this oil is supposed to be, I was really disappointed when I smelled it. I find that it has a definite ketchupy scent to it, which I don't like at all. I also find that the ketchupy scent persists even after I mix this EO with various other EOs. It's true that a little goes a long way, though. It's also true that this does smell like roses; I just find that a couple varieties of rose have a ketchupy smell that I dislike. That said, I often love the rose smell, and I am particularly fond of the Moroccan Rose absolute, which has a Rose smell with a definite spicy/musky scent. That is in my top 2 absolute favorite floral smells (along with the jasmine grandiflorum). Plus, it's MUCH less expensive than Rose Otto. So I'd recommend that rather than splurging on this one, either get the Rose Damascena, which smells much more like traditional rose to me, or if you're feeling adventurous, then try the Moroccan rose, which is HEAVENLY!!

This oil arrived a week ago. I opened it immediately and inhaled deeply over the bottle the fragrance was sublime! I carefully recapped the bottle and put it away. An hour later I re-entered the room where I had opened the bottled and the fragrance remained as wonderful as when I first opened it. This is the finest rose I have ever used.
