Sesame Carrier Oil

Botanical Name: Sesamum indicum
Extraction Method: Cold Pressed
Description: Sesame Oil is rich in vitamins E and B, and in minerals such as calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. It is an excellent emollient, and if used in dilution with other carrier oils, is a popular massage and aromatherapy carrier oil. It will not stain sheets.
Color: Light Yellow
Aromatic Description: Sesame has a very distinct seed aroma. It has the potential of overpowering other scents.
Common Uses: Sesame Oil is popular in cosmetics as a natural moisturizer. Similarly, it is a good choice for massage therapists and aromatherapists alike.
Consistency: Sesame is slightly thicker than typical Carrier Oils.
Absorption: Sesame oil will not stain sheets, but does leave an oily residue.
Shelf life: Sesame oil is slow to go rancid; users can expect a shelf life of 6 Months to 1 Year with proper storage conditions (cool, out of direct sunlight). Refrigeration after opening is recommended.
Cautions: Should be avoided by individuals with nut allergies.

When I had a blind sampling of carrier oils for an RMT, sesame oil was chosen for it's silky smooth texture. I use this oil in my sun creams.

At first whiff, I was concerned this oil would overpower my aromatherapy blend, but not at all! In fact, I'm currently experimenting with a CARRIER oil blend of 11 different oils, (possibly more in the future), and it worked out wonderfully! The overall blend did have a slightly "nutty" smell, typical of of the seed oils, but that went away with the addition of the E.O.'s. My percentages were 1 ounce of all the "other" oils, and the majority was Sweet Almond Oil to bring the mixture to 36 ounces. The ratio was 1:36, so the seed oils were diluted enough not to overpower, yet still present enough to add the extra dimension of their unique properties. I've already tested it on my own skin, and I must say that I'm impressed so far! I think this oil, even with it's characteristic smell, has found a permanent home in my Carrier Oil Blend.
