Description:
All three Shea Butters we carry – 100% Natural, Unrefined, Refined, and now our Certified Organic Variety – come from the fresh nut of the Karite tree. Because Shea Butter has a high amount of unsaponifiable matter, vitamin E and other natural active elements, it is a perfect natural moisturizing agent for the skin, particularly the face and hands. It penetrates deeply into the epidermis and leaves a smooth, satiny finish. Our Organic Shea Butter is naturally refined and is nearly white without any discernible scent.
Fair Trade Compliant
At New Directions Aromatics, we continue to source our products using ethical suppliers. Both our Shea and Cocoa Butter are Fair Trade Compliant. This means that profits go back to the community, that environmentally friendly production methods are utilized, that underage or forced labor are not used, and that a minimum cost is acquired regardless of market pressure.
Shea Butter Differences
Organic Shea Butter – This variety has all the same great properties of the other shea butters, but it has been certified organic under the ECOCERT program. This butter is naturally refined and confirms with the organic certification process.
Refined Shea Butter – The refined variety of shea is done so naturally, without the use of solvents or synthetic chemicals. The process uses diatimatious clay that pulls out the impurities and excessive odor. It is then naturally sun bleached to whiten the product further. This variety tends to be preferred in typical manufacturing.
100% Natural & Unrefined Shea Butter – This variety is produced by an ethically sponsored African Co-op. Using traditional methods, this variety of shea has a yellow color and the characteristic smell of the nut used in harvesting. The intensity of fragrance and color of this variety may vary, sometimes within the same batch, and some users may experience some graininess as the product has not been refined.

How much should I use?
Applications of under 5% should be viewed as adding value only to your label. The impact on your overall efficacy will be minimal.
To see a positive impact on your product, formulators should look to use approximately 10%. However, it is important to note that Shea Butter performs as an oil. Small, lab scale batches should be undertaken prior to full scale commercial runs.

I received this butter and was so excited when I opened the jar, it is creamy and white. It also does not have the strong odor that unrefined organic shea butter has. I usually order from Mountainrose herbs but I have found new directions shipping to be faster and I like their variety of products.

This was my first experience using shea butter in my soap and body butters. This particular shea is lovely. I've had it in bath salts where it leaves the sticky ring around the tub but in my soap bars it leaves nothing behind except softer skin. It's a clean, gentle emollient butter with a sweet smell. It seems to combine readily with the other butters and I am quite pleased with it. I suspect this particular butter helps retain scent in the soap.

Very clean color and smell. I used this making soaps but I think I should use this for facial creams or massage bars.

This is a great product, I whip it up with other oils to make a face cream or body cream. It is wonderful on your skin, my husband just loves it.

This product has great soothing properties with a very light sent that does not compete with the scents you may use with this butter when making any kind of soap, lotion, or salve. It is clean, near to clear and will take any color if your going to use one.
I highly reccomend using this product if your looking for a butter that blends well with other ingrediants used in preparing soaps, lotions, etc. Shea butter contains well know skin soothing and restorative properties since this product is organic (higher quality) ensuring more confidence that its healing properties are intact and not replaced with additives.

This is a fabulous product! Very minimal scent and it's great to just put on your skin straight. I love that New Directions offers organic options when possible at very reasonable prices. I am a big fan of this!
