MARKET REPORT JUNE 2021

The following report contains updates on the current trends in production and availability of the most in-demand Essential Oils and Carrier Oils sourced from around the globe.

Wheat Germ Carrier Oil

Wheat Germ is grown and harvested throughout the year in France and there have been no significant issues so far this year that could be expected to negatively impact cultivation. Total crop for this year is expected to be on par with last year's crop and prices for this oil are showing an increasing tendency in a market where demand is high.

Soya Bean Carrier Oil

The 2019/2020 season saw the smallest US Soybean crop in the last 7 years, which was 19.8% smaller than the crop from 2018/2019 and which translated to about 4.3 million MT less Soybean oil globally. While the 2020/2021 season crop is anticipated to be larger, it is not likely to be large enough to recoup inventories, as demand is high for both internal consumption and exports, and crush value is also high. Demand for this oil is expected to increase by about 3 million MT during the 2021/2022 season due to the growing market for its renewable diesel applications.

Canola Carrier Oil

Canadian grown Canola seeds yielded the smallest crop recorded in the last 5 years during the 2019/2020 season, largely on account of unfavorable weather conditions. The 2019/2020 crop was 10% smaller than the 2018/2019 crop and had 1% lower oil content. This difference translated into about 1 million MT less Canola oil in the global marketplace. The 2020/2021 crop is projected to be even smaller. Despite these production issues, the market for this resource has been steady; seed export has been strong while China recoups its supply, and the EU has been buying more than usual. Strong demand has formed the basis for a high volume of crude exports, particularly from Vancouver.

Palm Carrier Oil

Low crop yields from the 2019/2020 season saw a reduction of about 3.5 million MT of Palm oil in Indonesia and Malaysia compared to the previous year. Inventories reached their lowest points in the last 5 years with the 2019/2020 crop. Malaysia has recently been afflicted by severe flooding, which is causing difficulties with the harvest of palm fruit. Pressure from the US to reduce or exclude oil produced by Malaysian giants, FGV and Sime Darby, from the supply chain is further having a negative impact on the market.

Safflower Carrier Oil

Harvest season in Mexico runs from the end of March to the end of May and is now wrapping up. Yields have been low this season and production is forecasted to be roughly 10% lower than last year. A trending reputation for health benefits in the food and cosmetics industries has caused an increase in the global market for Safflower oil in recent years, although major producers are currently facing challenges to meet this demand. Between 2019 and 2020, global production decreased by about 9% due to unfavorable weather conditions, low yields, and reduced planting areas, along with complications due to Covid-19. Global production rates are anticipated to rise by about 3-4% in 2021 while global market value is expected to reach a compound annual growth rate of 5.1% for the next 7 years.

Cardamom Essential Oil

Cardamom Organic Essential Oil (Sri Lanka)

Harvest of Cardamom normally takes place from September to January in Sri Lanka. This crop grows at elevations above 600 m from sea level at the top of hills in wet and intermediate zones, with plantations being particularly concentrated around the cities of Kandy and Matale. The 2020 harvest season yielded 25% less crop than the 2019 harvest season on account of ongoing pest attacks and plant diseases. Demand for this oil is high due to an undersaturated market, especially for organic grade oil. The price for organic grade material is growing steadily compared to figures from 2019.

Cardamom Essential Oil (India)

Cardamom is harvested between July and January in south India, where it requires a mean temperature of 15°C to 35°C and an annual rainfall of 1500-2500 mm to thrive. Growing at an elevation of 600-1200 m above mean sea level, Cardamom fares best in acidic forest loam soils that are rich in humus. Oil production from the past year's harvest season is anticipated to weigh in at close to 13,000 tons, however subdued demand, trade restrictions, and worker shortages have slowed the market growth for this oil. Rising Covid-19 cases and plummeting prices have reduced Cardamom auctioneer activity and restrictions on movement imposed this year due to Covid protocols have prevented traders from participating in auctions. Processing activities have also slowed and as a result, dispatch of material to consuming centers has been delayed. Whereas north Indian demand for Cardamom and associated prices are typically high in April after harvesting season has finished, the trend was reversed this year due to a spike in Covid cases, which disrupted market dynamics significantly. The market for this oil remains unstable.

Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil

Cinnamon undergoes two harvesting periods per year in Sri Lanka, the first running from May to September and the second from October to January. Most of the raw material for oil production comes from the south of Sri Lanka, in the Galle and Matara districts, where more than 90% of organic crop production was recorded in 2019. Yield has been steady recently with major private organizations expected to plant more organic grade crops moving ahead. Despite crops sustaining flood damage due to unexpected rains during the 2020 growing season, market prices have been stable.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil

Juniper Berry Essential Oil (Slovenia)

Juniper berries are harvested in September and October in Slovenia where they grow wild. Improved standards of living and increased wages have greatly impacted the cost of production for this oil in recent years. The 2020 harvest yielded a comparable amount of crop as the 2019 harvest however production was still low compared to previous years before the increase in associated costs. In addition to higher worker wages, high demand for gin production and dried juniper has created competition for quality material, further impacting oil production volumes. While it is too early to make a prediction for the production value of the 2021 harvest, it is speculated that prices might never return to their previous levels. Demand for this oil remains high despite the increased price, as there are few alternatives on the market.

Juniper Berry Essential Oil (India)

Indian juniper berries grow best in cold climates, particularly in the Himalayan region. Harvest takes place between April and May and has recently finished for 2021. Crop yield this year was lower than in 2020, although the quality was much better. Demand for this oil remains high due to a gap in last year's supply which resulted from Covid-19 lockdowns during the crop season. The market is expected to remain firm moving ahead.
