Product Abstract: The birch tree is native to North America and grows up to 15-20 meters in height. It has slender branches, silver-white bark broken into scales and light green oval leaves. The well-known scent of Russian leather is due to the use of Birch Tar in its processing. It imparts durability to leather, and bookbinders have long used it because books bound in Russia leather are not liable to become moldy.
Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping), be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

Rating: Very smokey and masculine. Heavy, but works well in certain blends to add depth and a sultriness.

Rating: Wuuugh Hoooe! This is the smokiest scent ever. NO JOKE. I love the properties and that ND has this available. I will be using it in some masculine blends that I haven't been able to get that deep note from anything else yet. ND ROCKS!

Rating: This oil smell like the combination of smoky wood, earth, honey and brown sugar. Very heavy and nice. I'm a guy and I love this scent. I put it in some lotion for my face, mixing it with coffee and Frankincense essentials oils. This one is one of my favorites.

Rating: Looking forward to trying this out as a base note to add a smokey, leathery scent to masculine blends. I think it will work well. As other reviews have said, you don't need that much... it is strong out of the bottle. It's very similar in scent to pine tar, but not nearly as offensive as that. I have never used birch tar, so it's exciting to see this offered by NDA.

Rating: Whoa! this stuff does smell like a campfire or smoked meat. It would be great to add just a tiny amount to a masculine scent, but I find that you have to dilute it quite a lot before you get to that point, and it's a little tricky, since this oil is very free-flowing. For just the scent, I prefer cade, which is also smokey, but it's so resinous that it's easier to use just a tiny bit at a time.

Rating: top quality as always from NDA, smells to me less like a campfire and exactly like smoked sausage.

Rating: Perfect for a smoky or leathery note in a perfume. I will try it for eczema too.

Rating: To those comparing the smell of birch tar EO to ham or an ashtray, I would add that there is a strong salty smell to go with the smoke so the comparison to cured meats seems appropriate. However, I could also see how someone might sense a staleness or acridness if they were sensitive to that kind of smell. So I suggest using it sparingly in a blend. it only takes a tiny amount of birch tar in an EO blend to give it a strong and masculine base note. I only use it at about 1% of the blend it's in and you can't miss it. I've got some other ideas for blends that I want to try it at slightly higher percentages.
Rating: You have no idea how hard I have been looking for this oil! I was thrilled to find that you carry it, and that it is such a superb quality! I was so very fortunate to have a very special country doctor when I was growing up, and he made this incredible salve with birch tar! It healed all kinds of skin ailments like NOTHING I have ever found since. He has long passed away and his family would not sell his formulas (alas, they may be lost forever!) nor would they continue his work. I am now working to recreate this wonderful salve which had birch tar as the key ingredient! This birch tar oil is perfect and an excellent grade! Thank you so much for having the foresight to bring in a special oil that many do not know about! It is MUCH more than a scent!
Rating: This stuff is strong but just awesome, I've used it in a unique woody aftershave! It mixes nicely and helps produce a very masculine scent!

Rating: Thanks for your birch tar. I can smell the fire the rain put out. Old motor oil. Snuff. New telephone pole. Balm and wintergreen. Your birch tar. It's so fine. So tricky. Easy to overdo. Just a dab will do. Thank you.

Rating: Wow! What a remarkable oil! It smells just like a campfire. I think it would be a great addition to a woodsy soap.

Rating: I love Campfire smell, and I thought I'd experiment a bit buying some new oils. I was really disappointed in this one. To me, it smells like a wet ashtray dumped inside an old boot. Not the nice smokey scent I was hoping for.
But who knows, perhaps one day I'll find this to be the perfect addition to some wonderful perfume blend. ::shrug::
For now, I'm afraid to open it again.
Rating: very smoky and "campfirey"- strangely enough, my mom thought it smelled like ham (!!!!!) after sniffing it straight out of the bottle. i think it has a strong smokiness that comes through... which i guess makes her think of smoked ham!
Rating: Used in all my products for skin disorders! Very healing and soothing!
