Botanical Name: Artemisia pallens

Main Constituents:
Davanon: 55%

Plant Part: Stems and Leaves

Origin: India

Processing Method: Steam Distilled

Description / Color / Consistency: A viscous, dark green to reddish-brownish liquid.

Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: The scent of Davana is difficult to express because it smells very different on each individual. The descriptions tend to alternate between rather masculine floral scents to a woodsy, balsamic odor.

Blends With: Davana Essential Oil can be easily blended, but the end result may be different on different users. Davana should be blended to suit individuals.

Product Abstract: Davana is a small plant with the oil coming from the stems and leaves. Each day, the faithful in India offer Davana blossoms to Shiva, the god of Transformation. The flowers remain on his altar throughout the day and are removed in the evening. When applied to the skin, Davana can have a different scent on diverse people, a peculiar property which is highly valued in perfumery to create fragrances with individual notes.

Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping), be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

The aroma of this oils is very unique. When storing be sure to store upright because this oil can new gummy and be very sticky. I wasn't able to use mine because the lid fused to bottle after falling on it's side

Really, this oil is strange but lovely. It smells rotten one minute, then delightfully fruity with a hint of aldehyde the next. I've just started to play with it, it plays nicely with palmarosa.

What an odd scent...When I first opened the bottle, UGH! terrible! I was so disappointed for such an expensive oil. It smelled like rotten fruit. A couple days later, I smelled it again -- it wasn't as bad as days ago...So I blended it with a few other oils, creating a gross scent that blended, days later, into a nice, fruity note. Interesting and I can't wait for it to grow on me even more.

I was eager to try this out because of its allegedly smelling different on diverse people. To my findings, it smells about the same. Perhaps my test group wasnt diverse enough, but all in all a great oil. I adds a unique scent to my fragrance blends.

I can't explain what this smells like, but I've come to really love it. I like to add a bit of lemon EO to this and then add to shampoo/conditioner. I've had people ask why my hair smells amazing, so I guess I'm not the only one who likes it! It's expensive, but it's definitely unique and a little goes a long way.

Davana is definitely in my top 5 faves. I find it not only to smell different on different people, but it seems to be described way differently by each person. I also find it to smell different at different times. I definitely get the rum and grape smells of many other reviewers. But most often I get blueberry, patchouli-ish, herbaceous, and super sweet. I go to this when I need some deep relaxation. I find it to be very medatative and a psychic enhancer. I use it in my "secret" blend with sandalwood and kaffir lime leaf (come on NDA!). Everyone thinks it's amazing and asks me what I'm wearing. It can really give a perfume that mysterious vibe. This price is also superb.

Was curious after reading the reviews and ordered a sample of this one with a bunch of other ones, just to try. Not quite sure how to describe it, one person described it as a brandy type smell and can see that, almost like a good ice wine/ brandy/ and a bit flowery smell. Keep opening the bottle. It has a pretty intense smell that seem to fill up the room in a good way. Not sure yet what to mix it with yet, but already know that I will order more, despite the price, as soon as I run out.

okay, I bought this one just because the reviews made it seem so mysterious. The first thing that I think of when I smell this is...stone fruits and their pits. Reminds me of my mother making pints and pints of wild plum jam. It also reminds me of the tart cherries canned in water, but not the cherries in the jelly stuff. Strong scent that has some sort of spice note, too. I just can't get a handle on it. Makes my mouth water, but then again, I get tired of the thick fruitiness in a hurry. I want to love it, I just don't know what to blend with it to make it behave for me.

This one is a wild child. It reminds me of a very sweet wine. It is strong and tenacious and will eat the other scents in a blend alive if you are not careful. Moderation is the key. That, said, it is lovely.

This one is definitely in my top 5 unique EOs! I haven't used it in products as the sole EO, but in blends it adds such an unusual tone. The best I can describe it is that it "fills out" the blend. It's rich and adds back bone when used with citruses and goes more floral with sandalwood and earthy EOs. UNIQUE! Love it! Thanks ND!!!

I just bought this and was really intrigued by the scent when I opened it. I can't really explain it. It's very unique. It'll be interesting to see how the scent changes with things that are blended with it.

I bought this quite a while ago (6 months) and was so overwhelmed by it I put it away and focused on other oils. I could tell there was a nice scent somewhere in that powerful hit so I finally decided to experiment with it and mixed it with some other strong eo's and finally tamed it into something I love. My blend is vanilla, cinnamon, davana and vetiver. Though the davana has the lowest percentage (except the vetiver that was a couple drops less) it is the strongest scent detectable when worn. The cinnamon slightly edges in at first sniff in the bottle but lessens to an incredible teaser within a minute after applied. The 1/6 oz will last a very long time as it only takes a few drops in a perfume blend. I am now looking forward to the challenge of finding softer aromas to compliment it that might work well for me also.

I used Davana in my higher end body lotion formula and 1/6oz scented the entire batch. My next batch I will use even less. The smell is intoxicating for me and i love to just slather my lotion on. It does smell different on each individual and they all love it. Although this oil is a bit on the pricey side, I will be ordering more for my entire line of body products.

If I could give this ten stars I would! You have to try this oil, even if its just to sample it. The smell is absolutely amazing. To me it smells like fizzy grape soda, and to my hubby it smells like some sort of stonefruit. Truly a divine scent!

Incredible apricot/peachy bouguet straight from the bottle. Morphs into a different scent on application to the skin. As previous reviewers have said, it smells different on each person. I like it neet, but I'm going to try mixing it and see what results.

Davana is by far the most unusally heady scent I have ever encountered. It is as rich as the thick scent of tuberose, but has none of the cloying sweetness. For me it has the "body" of a rich armangnac brandy - grapey fullness cut with a sharper "edge"of fermentation. The undertones are earthy and reminiscent of that rainy day decay smell of wet leaves in mud, yet invigorating. It is a "heart" opener and a body thrummer, although it is intoxicating rather than clarifying to my brain. If you need to get out of your head this is erotic and grounding as well. Of course, like Shiva, davana is different to different people. I was hooked from the start.

I found this sent to not only be rich, sweet and earthy but also fruity almost a grape scent, Very Interesting and in doing my homework on this oil Davana Essential Oil blends with most of the Citrus, Spicy and Woody Essential Oils such as neroli, geranium, grapefruit, cedar wood, caraway, coriander and chamomile so I can't wait to blend this as a body wash and or shampoo/conditioner

To me Davana in its concentrated form smell like Rum liquer. At first I did not favor it at all, but it is starting to grow on me. I bought it primarily for its anti-parasitic properties, which i have no proff of it is working.

New Directions is correct is saying it is a difficult oil to describe, as each person I've tried it with has experienced a different description. Definitely unique to each person. I use it in my sensual blends and one of my anxiety relief blends. Reasonably priced for such a unique oil. Recommeded for the aromatherapist looking for something different.
