Description / Color / Consistency: A thin, pale yellow to yellow liquid.
Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A middle note with a medium aroma, Ho Wood Essential Oil has a sweeter woody scent like rosewood's, with camphoraceous notes.
Product Abstract: Ho Wood Essential Oil has recently been used as a replacement for Rosewood Essential Oil because of its similar chemical properties and applications. Previously used for sword and knife handles because it would not scratch the fine blades, Ho Wood became more popular in 1985 when a major explosion at a linalool-producing facility greatly decreased the available supply, which launched Ho Wood as a natural and sustainable replacement. Locally referred to as Shiu Oil, it is commonly broken for its aromatic constituents.
Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.
WARNING Prop 65: This product contains a component which is listed under California Proposition 65. California residents will receive this product labeled accordingly.

Rating: This was my first time trying howood, but the sweet and fruity notes of this essential oil were just perfect for my apple-themed soap. Blended with just a small amount of cinnamon leaf and clove essential oils and you have a wonderful fruit and spice fragrance. Added this to my favorites list!
Rating: I love this oil. It is one of my favorites for relaxing. It smells amazing with different citrus oils and the price is amazing!

Rating: So I love this EO!! My favorite by far! To me, it literally smells like fruit-loops & I was totally not expecting that. Don’t ever stop selling this please!

Rating: I love Ho wood. Especially blended with hemlock and tea tree which makes a wonderful intense inhaler.
Rating: I like how this oil blends with Lavender since they are both calming. I like the fact that it is not overpowering or unpleasant but can turn the lavender scent into something leaning a little more unisex. I've been using essential oils for over 18 years and this was my first purchase of this essential oil but have produced a product that is pretty popular with it so I'll be ordering more. Thank You, New Directions!
Rating: I got this to start phasing out my products with Rosewood. I appreciate that it is a more sustainable option and it has a remarkably similar scent. I would say it is slightly less heady than Rosewood (which is fine with me), but not distinctly different. Thanks NDA for being earth conscious!

Rating: I have used this EO for many years and I love it. It is a nice substitution for Rosewood, although it is strong so follow the cautions. Otherwise, it is very soothing and definitely a keeper.

Rating: Love this oil! It has a smooth, woodsy scent with a lot of sweetness and a bit of floral. The scent lasts a long time, too. I can definitely appreciate this as a sedative/ relaxant due to the high linalool content. Very glad i ordered this.
Rating: I bought this based on information that it has the same benefits as rosewood, I anticipated a generic "woodsy" scent. Ho Wood has a bright, sunny, light woodsy scent, truly appealing! Definitely usable in products for both genders.

Rating: Thank you to the two reviewers who compared Ho Wood to Rosewood. I was really hoping you were right, and the first thing I thought when I opened the bottle is that it smells almost identical to rosewood. The same overall fragrance, with a tiny bit more of a camphor/medicinal base note which is not very noticeable. It's quite lovely and I'm thrilled that I have a Rosewood replacement, since Rosewood is endangered.
Rating: Got a sample size of this oil just for experimentation. This oil has a very soft, sweetness to it that is like a toned down atlas cedar. I think it is going to be a little too similar to atlas cedar for me to have a use for it right now, but it would probably be useful in a perfume blend where a less offensive woody scent is desired. It doesn't seem to have that sharp, slap in the face kind of aroma that cedar can have out of the bottle.

Rating: This EO is a bit sharp, and the camphoraceous notes definitely stand out. I don't smell the floral notes, and it's not sweet to me. Overall, while not unpleasant, it's not one of my favorites for aromatic applications, and it's a possible dermal irritant, so only its therapeutic properties would be of much interest to me.

Rating: Delightful. A soft, almost powdery, slightly sweet wood. I ordered 5ml of it, and after smelling it, I wish I'd ordered the 100ml bottle!
Rating: This is a really interesting oil. It is less assertively woody than amyris or cedarwood. It has a sweet note that softens the overall fragrance. But it's by no means weak, bland, or overtly "feminine." I used it in a patchouli blend for CP soap and it did not get lost amidst the other essential oils. I look forward to soaping it alone as well.

Rating: Ho Wood has a wonderful fruity-wood smell. It mixes with almost every other oil that I use, and my clients love it. Thanks!

Rating: This oil smells so sweet, it's reminds me of geranium bourbon or roman chamomile. I think it's going to mix really well with a lot of oils.

Rating: Always on the lookout for natural preservatives, I found howood to be an excellent and healing addition to any cosmetic making. It has become a staple in my recipes, both for its effects and for its scent.

Rating: Great stuff - I'm back for a larger bottle. Blends well with all the wood and citrus types; perks up bland, overly sweet smells and tones down the overly pungent ones. I have only used this in blends so far, but I could really enjoy this on its own. I "rinsed" the empty bottle with carrier oil and added a little diluted cedar atlas and sandalwood for my own little "wish I was a carpenter" blend. What can I say, I like the wood oils!
Rating: I made cp soap with this as the scent back in September 2007 and the scent is still just as strong in the soap that is still sitting here in storage. Some scents fade but this one has stayed very well.

Rosewood is out of price for me and my soap making business....but HO WOOD is a really great remplacement!

Rating: I just rubbed my hands with a few drops of ho wood: surely astringent. And the aroma!

Rating: I ordered this one because the 1/6 oz was so affordable and I have always wanted to experience this little heard of oil. It is a very complex scent, that is almost a sweet woody to my nose. It is slightly medicinal and is strangly familiar. Try it in the smallest size, it is worth experiencing.

Rating: Very similar to Rosewood in chemical composition but produced from a renewable resource. The green alternative for the caring person. Best used for acne, dermatitis, frigidity, general skin care, headaches, immune system stimulation, infections, nausea, scars, sensitive skin, stress, tension, wounds, wrinkles. This one is priced right and very good quality.
