Shea Butter 100% Natural (Burkina Faso)

RatingRatingRatingRatingRating
Average Product Rating: 4.4 / 5 (Based on 10 Customer Reviews)

This 100% natural Shea Butter is hand-gathered by women participating in Fair Trade collectives in West Africa, which do not have facilities for finer filtering and cleaning of their product. It is extracted from the Shea nut, and processed by traditional methods, so it is unrefined and may contain some minor impurities. It may have a characteristic oilier, less nutty odor compared to that of the Shea Butter from Ghana, and it tends to be yellow in color. Its texture is grainier than the Ghana variety, but simple slow melting in a double boiler will help to create a smoother texture. The addition of Fractionated Coconut Oil to this Butter, with its high content of Capric and Caprylic Acids, can also help in obtaining a smoother texture.

Common Uses: Used predominantly for skin care, Shea Butter is known for its moisturizing and emollient properties. It is used as a base for medicinal ointments, and has been claimed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Rich in vitamins and fatty acids, Shea Butter penetrates deeply into the epidermis and leaves a smooth, satiny finish. It is also said to have natural antioxidant properties; and the naturally occurring cinnamic acid provides UV protection for the skin.
Shea Butter can be used to make massage butters, body butters, lip balms, as a moisturizing agent in soaps and shaving creams, and as a treatment for minor skin wounds and irritations.

Appearance: This butter is yellow in color and has a rich creamy texture. If customers find the texture to be grainy, a simple slow melting in a double-boiler will solve that issue.

Please Note: Shea Butter from Burkina Faso may in some instances be grainy in nature. This is a natural occurrence. To achieve a smooth texture and consistency we recommend that the product be heated until liquefied, mixed thoroughly, cooled off and stored in cold temperatures.

Recommended Usage:
Lotions & Creams: 2 - 20 %
Balms: 5 100 %
Bar Soaps: 5 - 20 %
Hair Conditioners: 1 10 %

When adding butters to creams and lotions, it might be necessary to gently warm them until the texture can be incorporated into the final product. Using a hand blender, create a vortex with your cream or lotion and drizzle your melted butter to fully incorporate. For addition in soaps, the general rule of thumb is 1 tablespoon per pound. As with most raw materials, results may vary, so we strongly recommend small, lab scale batches prior to any commercial manufacturing.

Shelf Life: This butter should be stored in a cool dark place and has a shelf-life of 1 year when stored properly.

Shea butter has so many wonderful qualities and I've used it for a couple of years in my lotions and soaps and love it. When purchasing from ND, I decided to try this type first (Burkina Faso) and if you are using it in small quantities in soap or lotions, it works great, the scent ALMOST disappears. BUT I make a soap which has a high quantity of Shea, and once it had finished curing the smell was so strong I wondered what I did wrong. After a little investigating, I realized it was the Shea Butter. I honestly can't stand the smell. After opening the container of Shea again, the smell seemed to be stronger, more burnt and acidic...not sure why I didn't notice it before. Some of my customers have told me they don't mind the smell and others like myself, don't like it. Next I will be trying the Ghana variety, the scent is more nutty and I don't mind it - but we'll see what happens once processed in my recipe....it may be worth going to a refined variety of Shea for this particular soap...we'll see.

I love the softness of this butter. It gives this butter a uniqueness because other butters are so hard at room temperature. but honestly there are probably several that I have yet to try, like pumpkin which seems to be having some popularity right now.

This is my first experience with shea butter and I loved it. I placed it in a smaller glass bottle. Every time I have a shower, I place the bottle into a sink with running hot water for a few mins. It helps a lot to melt little lumps of she butter.

This was my first time ordering Shea Butter from Burkina Faso. I have ordered Shea from Ghana several times and I wanted to see the difference. I must say that I was very impressed with how smooth and buttery the Burkina Faso Shea Butter is. For those that find the Shea from Ghana to have a smell that is offensive, the Shea Butter from Burkina Faso is much more suttle and pleasing. It still has a nutty smell but it is not as strong and I find it to be really pleasant. I was pleased with the packaging the product came in as well. Very sturdy container with very nice labeling. I disagree with the other reviewer about the product being grainy. The small difference in texture in my Shea Butter had to do with the heating and cooling of my Shea in transport. As soon as I rubbed the Shea into my skin it melted beautifully with no graininess. I will definitely be ordering from New Directions Aromatics again. Your the best kept secret on the web for good Shea Butter at great prices in my opinion.

I am changing my review of this particular Shea Butter. I have had time to experiment with others butters and this is definitely a better butter. I found others to be hard, this does melt on the skin and absorbs well. The grainy I experienced was from over heating. I'm comng back to this one soon.

I thought this Shea Butter was dark and grainy. I used it in a soap recipe, the soap was darker than the previous soap I had made with the Shea Butter from Ghana.

LOVE IT! I make a body balm with it, my recipe is 55% Shea, and everyone is in love. A little goes a long way. For dry hands and callused feet, it's a dream. With regular use, say bye-bye to cracked heels and HELLO to baby-bottom-soft tootsies :-) Yes, after application, there is a bit of oil (mind you, shea is not my only ingredient, so I'm not quick to blame it) BUT it absorbs into the skin beautifully. Unlike those petroleum based crap products in the pharmacy which CAN'T be absorbed. Loving the natural stuff on this site and learning more every day :-)

I purchased this butter a month ago and have been using it in a whipped body butter along with soy butter. It does need to be melted completely or it will leave small lumps of shea butter. It does work well is is easy to scent using fragrance oils or essential oils. I love this and it's going to be a staple in my whipped body butter
