Botanical Name: Cananga odorata

Main Constituents:
Germacrene: 20%

Plant Part: Flowers

Origin: Madagascar

Processing Method: Steam Distilled

Description / Color / Consistency: A thin pale to dark yellow liquid.

Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: Cananga has a strong, sweet, exotic, deeply floral and heady top note.

Blends With: Rosewood, Jasmine, Vetiver, Bergamot, Cassia and Rose.

Product Abstract: Cananga is a tall tropical tree up to 20m high with large, fragrant flowers that can be pink, mauve or yellow. The yellow flowers are considered best for extracting the essential oil. Also called Perfume Tree and Ylang Ylang (or 'flower of flowers'), it is a common tree in Indonesia, with Ylang Ylang blossoms from the f. genuina, and Cananga blossoms from f. macrophylla of the Canangium odorata. Its fragrant flowers are worn for personal adornment, and the fresh flowers are strewn on the beds of newly married couples. Our Cananga Essential Oil is the fourth distillation of the oil from the flowers.

Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

I'd call the scent of cananga a "chameleon scent". Straight from the bottle it's like inhaling licorice (that's my grandon's description and it fits), mixed with lotion it has a slightly spicy floral scent very like ylang-ylang. Lovely oil, get it while you can.

this is like the grown up version of ylang ylang, more green, less sweet, herbaceous and slightly woody. It doesn't have the cloying sweetness of ylang ylang and it can be disguised into a blend where ylang ylang could overpower.

I loathe this scent in the bottle but, oddly, I love it in dilution. I haven't bothered to blend it because it doesn't need support.

I should've read the reviews a little more carefully. This does smell a lot like ylang ylang. It's very pleasant, though.

This oil smells like Ylang Ylang because it is the same plant (look at the Latin name). It just comes from south Asia from where it originates; not like Ylang Ylang that was transplanted to Madagascar. I personally like this version over the Ylang Ylang because it smells fresher and not overly sweet. Maybe it smells this way because it comes from the soils where it originates from.

this is incredibly similar to ylang ylang, so unless you are a true EO connaisseur, you probably only need to own one of them. This is also super strong right out of the bottle, so I recommend diluting it before use.

Creamy and luxurious, this could be ylang-ylang's sassy little sister. It's presence is a gentler floral, a bit more herbal too. Very useful in feminine romantic blends!

This oil is absolutely divine smelling. It's strong, very floral smelling, similar to rose but much less expensive. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank the New Directions staff for being so incredibly efficient and friendly when I pick up my supplies.

I'm not sure what the difference between this and Ylang Ylang is. When it comes to ylang ylang I prefer the ylang ylang extra. When I'm making soap and I want the scent of ylang ylang but I don't want to use the good/expensive stuff I use the Cananga. It smells like a leafier version of ylang ylang which seems to last longer than a floral/higher note version.
