Organic refers to produce and other ingredients grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or ionizing radiation.

Requirements for organic personal care products
For personal care products such as cosmetics, rinse-off and leave-on formulas, and personal hygiene products, QAI provides organic certification through the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), as well as through NSF/ANSI 305: Personal Care Products Containing Organic Ingredients.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not define or regulate the term “organic” in regard to cosmetics, body care, or personal care products. Instead, the USDA regulates the term “organic” as it applies to agricultural products, through the National Organic Program.
A cosmetic, body care, or personal care product must meet USDA/NOP organic product, handling, processing, and labeling standards for its agricultural ingredients in order to be eligible for certification under the NOP regulations.

Overview of the Canada Organic Regime
In Canada, products labeled as “organic” must meet the national standards outlined in Part 13 of the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) under the Canada Organic Regime (COR). The purpose of the COR is to regulate all parties involved in the certification of organic products, and to verify that all applicable regulatory requirements, standards, and guidance documents are being met.
The COR applies to any organic product that crosses provincial or international borders, including agricultural ingredients, seeds, and animal feed.
