Product Abstract: The Benzoin tree originates in Java, Sumatra and Thailand where it can grow up to 8 meters (20 feet). Deep incisions are made in the trunk of the tree from which the grayish-colored sap exudes. When the resinous lump becomes hard and brittle, it is collected from the bark. It is then cleaned and processed by solvent extraction to produce the thick, resinous oil. Also known as Gum Benjamin, Benzoin is one of the classic ingredients of incense, and it has been widely used in perfumery. We recommend placing the bottle in a very hot water bath, changing the water frequently and once it is back to the liquid state, gently agitate before use.
Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.
Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

Rating: Great for soap! I like to blend this with other essential oils, it helps balance out the scents and tie everything together while giving it more depth and loveliness. It does slightly discolor cp soaps, but if you add a small amount to a colored portion your soaps will still look lovely :)

Rating: I have recently purchased this product and have fallen in love with it for it's warm (almost coffee-like) aroma. A little goes a long way. I have used this in my cp soap and it worked very well. Place the bottle in a cup of warm water to loosen the resin before pouring or you will get glops of resin vs. a nice stream that you can measure. I found that once I added it to my EO blend that if I placed the entire blend (in a glass jar with a lid) into a warm water bath while making my soap, this worked best. This way your resin doesn't settle out.

Rating: So wonderful! Yes, its thick but well worth the effort. Stocking up now for fall as it seems to get sold out around then for fall/winter products. Thank you NDA!!!
Rating: Love this Benzoin; I use it in an arthritis remedy and have had folks use the remedy just because this is one of the ingredients. It is very viscous and needs thorough warming to use, but worth the effort. Has a warm, inviting scent. Well done NDA, continue to offer this great product.
Rating: OMG!!! I love this oil so much that I went through my first bottle so fast and had to purchase a larger one the second time, I love Benzoin resin, but am really crazy about this oil. I want to add it to all of my mixtures.

Rating: I was looking for something like Peru balsam, and this is it. I was willing to work for it but it's not as thick as I feared from the other reviews. There are very few base/fixative EO's that I love and this is one of them.
Rating: Benzoin is one of those hit or miss EO's because, depending on origin, it can be quite sweet, with vanilla like-scent, or have an additional slight smoky, leathery undertone. Also, viscosity is a conundrum with this oil. I have worked with pure, undiluted Benzoins that were warm and dark, almost molasses colored and blended perfectly, yet others which sat in a clump at the bottom of a mix and took quite some time until they finally blended in. Even after making a 50% dilution with those (either in alcohol base of DPG), they still took a little time.
This particular NDA's Benzoin is excellent but, to me, is on the side of the ones with a slight smoky, leather undertone. This is slight, mind you, and almost imperceptible, but it's there. As other have stated, this Benzoin, unlike some others, will not stay layered and will blend easily into the mix. It is not as dark as other Benzoins I use. In a pipette, it looks amber colored rather than deep dark brown. So, to sum it up, I would say that it is all subjective. I can use all of the Benzoins I have for different things, and NDA's certainly has a place in that roster. The price also makes it hard to resist.
Rating: Has a light vanilla-like smell. It is also very thick and needs to be "melted" in warm water or shaken really well to be incorporated into other oils.

Rating: I have found my personal favorite! I love this scent so much that I put it in the soap that I made. I also made a massage and a perfume oil with this. The oil is so thick and the scent is so strong that you do not need much. I will be buying a larger bottle next time because I so not want to run out.

Rating: Has a very sweet, sugary scent. I loved the scent and the price so I bought a lot, but I'm very wary of it being a skin sensitizer so I don't use a lot. A little goes a long way though, so I'm overall happy with this product.

Rating: When other reviewers say "thick", they are not kidding. Think cold molasses. Introduced this into a chai blend inside a 16 oz bottle. It stayed layered at the bottom when undisturbed but after I capped the bottle and shook it up it has stayed blended with the thinner oils. I've checked it without touching several times over the last few weeks and still no separation. I got this as a substitute for vanilla in CP soap. Although the smell is very "cream soda" out of the bottle, the finished products that I make tend to just have a general sweet smell. Not super definable vanilla, just generally sweet. A wonderful addition to my collection and you can't argue with that price.

Rating: I have purchased Benzoin from other suppliers, then tried this from New Directions, and this is my favorite Benzoin, it smells lovely with a vanilla like scent. It is thick, but blends well with other essential oils. I use it in body butters, and handmade soaps, and they have all turned out great.
Rating: I recommend this resin to everyone -- its heavenly viscosity, the delicious vanilla-like scent. I have yet to use this in any products, but it is great in blends, softening and sweetening anything. I could smell this all day long. Incredible and I am so glad I bought a larger size than I usually would have while testing a new oil.

Rating: Wow. I am so, so glad that I made this purchase. I had wondered how to incorporate a rich vanilla scent without using fragrance oil, and this is absolutely perfect.

Rating: This EO is wonderful. A soft base note that contributes to a subtle, feminine scent. As others have said, it is reminiscent of cream soda or vanilla, with a very very faint touch of black licorice. Challenging to deal with its viscosity - almost impossible to work with on its own - but a hot water bath & dilution is a straightforward fix.
My favorite thing about Benzoin EO is that it mixes well with nearly everything. It'll give a subtle sweetness even to powerhouses like Lemongrass or Patchouli. However, there's a fine line b/c it can easily be overpowered.
By:Michael, Los Angeles, California Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 13-Jan-2015
Rating: A vanilla sugar/ cream soda scent, with a touch of amber. The dropper top is useless, but at least it's less viscous than Labdanum. I really wish this came in a de-acidified form (benzoic and cinnamic acids removed). It would probably be a lot less thick and it's unlikely that they add much to the scent (speaking as a chemist).
On the upside, the benzoic acid is a preservative and may benefit your products. Can't beat the price, for sure.

Rating: super versatile oil! yes its very thick but I've never had a problem with blending, just give your blend a good shake and it will all come together and stay together without separation. Love you benzoin!
By:Robert, Prescot, California Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 29-Oct-2013
Rating: Smells like the leading brand of cream soda, a mellow vanilla. It's very thick --- I'm not sure how I'll use it. Four stars, with one off because I wasn't expecting the viscosity.
By:Chana, New York, New York Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Feb-2014
Rating: This is my favorite base note for CP soaps. It is thick and viscous but all you need to do is mix it well with a little carrier oil before adding it to the soap and there shouldn't be any problems with clumping. DO NOT warm it in water bath when mixed with oil because it will become a gummy/rubbery mess.
By:Silvia, Riverside, California Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 15-Apr-2013
Rating: Benzoin was one of my first purchases from NDA. It has a lovely warm vanilla like scent. I place the bottle in a warm water bath to liquify it and a little goes a very long way. Beautiful scent for diffusing! I was very pleased with this affordable eo, not knowing what to expect because it was so affordable!! Thanks NDA!

Rating: sweet and with an amber-like, vanilla tinge. So happy that I purchased the 3.3 oz! It will last me forever!
By:Anna, Chattanooga, Tennessee Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 06-Jun-2014
Rating: It is a bit thick, but with a very nice and warm amber-vanilla scent. I couldn't get it through the dropper (the birch tar and labdanum also did not wish to proceed through the dropper) So I've taken them out and use a dipped toothpick to drop the oils into lotions and potions.
By:Anna, Chattanooga, Tennessee Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 06-Jun-2014
Rating: I LOVE this! It's so unique for an EO, I never knew there were any sweet smelling ones. This one smells warm and lightly sweet & spicy, almost like vanilla but different. It's more like a cream alcoholic beverage scent. It smells amazing in my hand cream, I can't stop smelling my hands when I use it! It's great as a stand alone scent and mixed with other fragrances or EO's. I'm interested in trying it in a face cream for the anti-acneic properties as my skin is still breaking out at 26. The thickness of this does make it a little difficult to work with, but it's really no big deal. I took out the dropper as there is no way to get it out that way. I just put it in a bowl of hot water while I'm working until I'm ready to use it, then use a knife to stop the flow once I get to the weight I need.
This one is a definite must!
Rating: This mixes nicely with lavender for a sweeter floral smell! It is thick and a little harder to use because of that. I warmed it in a bath but I was afraid to make it too hot because I don't want to harm the essential oil! Still it is workable I just had to take the dropper tip off to get it out. Overall very pleased.

Rating: In the bottle it smells exactly like cream soda. Watch out, it will ruin clothing. Makes great incense.
Rating: Benzoin is wonderful! Rather than the clean sharp vanilla bean smell this has the warm vanilla scent you get from just baked cookies. Everyone loves the scent. It is thick though and has to be worked with.
Rating: I wouldn't say that this is purely like a vanilla scent - to me it was a very very mellow scent - something between vanilla and brown sugar - almost like frosting. Love it for facial care.

Rating: A nice base note and fixative for citrus scents. Dissolves easily when blended with your essential oils prior to adding to cp soap. A warm water bath in the colder months will help it move out of the bottle faster. I also have a 20x vanilla oleoresin and benzoin definitely has a sugary vanilla note.

Rating: This stuff is really amazing. It is sticky in the bottle (used a hot water bath & it liquified well). It has that warm, sweet richness to it that other EOs can't provide. I use it in my spicy blends to bring soft sweetness. When I am blending shampoos and shower gels I would like to see if it rinses well in combination with emollients and emulsifiers etc, because washing it off of hands, glass, spatula etc it has a resin feel that is hard to get off when water is on it, but then it does eventually go away. So wondering how it rinses in other circumstances.
By:Jaipreet, Livermore, California Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Oct-2011
Rating: This is my first review after receiving my 3rd order from you. This oil is superb, but a challenge. The resin was so sticky I had to stick a chopstick in to get it out of the bottle. Once out, it stuck to the mixing bowl. So I decided to mix it directly into your shampoo base- and amazingly it mixed with no problem.
I love the vanilla-y honey scent, and it made an invitingly masculine fragrance mixed with cedarwood and lavender. All in all, there is a learning curve with this, but it is one of the most lovely and useful scents around.
By:M., Irving, Texas Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 11-Sep-2012
Rating: The scent is vanilla-y goodness. I'm a little nervous about using it, given the thicker consistency, but it will be well worth any trouble I have.

Rating: Gooey goodness :-) This is a very sticky, viscous liquid but not difficult to use. It is sweet and slightly spicy and it smells like I imagine desserts eaten by gods do.
By:Tiffany, Morrisville, Pennsylvania Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 24-Dec-2012
Rating: This product smells wonderful-sort of like a creamy vanilla. However, my problem was that it is very difficult to incorporate into CP soap. It is very thick and difficult to mix with other essential oils. Will try to use it in perfume soon because I love the scent.

Date: Loyal Customer Since: 17-Jul-2012
Rating: Scent is quite nice. It is extremely gooey thick. The dripper is kind of counterproductive. I managed to dilute it in perfumer's alcohol down to 75%-ish to keep it liquid form so it could be used with dropper. If you get the neat oil onto your hand, it'll stay there. I tried to wash it off with soap and rubbing alcohol. No use. Wipe off as much as you can with toilet tissue and just let it remove itself overtime (cleared after I slept). I'll probably only use it for perfumery and not therapeutic.
By:Tuan, Toronto, Ontario Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Nov-2005
Rating: Nice, sweet vanilla-like smell. People are a little scared of the name as it sounds too much like benzene, which probably wouldn't be good in soap. It makes for a nice sweet base note, and also a good fixative, however it's very difficult to work with. I have yet to successfully liquefy it in a water bath as it always gets too hot and then forms resin like clumps in my soap (which might be nice, but not what I'm going for). The only success I've had is by heating it up in the sun, or in my pocket, and then making sure to use my essential oil blend quickly before the benzoin separates out and gets too viscous again. Also, I'm a little concerned about what I've read about it being a sensitizer.

Rating: Smells like vanilla. Thick as honey. It's used as a fixative for scents, but it also has skin benefiting properties, which makes it great for soaping. I have nothing bad to say about Benzoin. It's fantastic.
By:Steven, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 11-Dec-2011
Rating: I agree with many that this is difficult to work with if you're trying to incorporate it into a formula, which was not my intent.
I take the stopper out and put a very small dab of it along with some Himalayan cedar and a few drops of lemon into the candle diffuser. Absolutely incredible.

Rating: Love the honeyed-vanilla scent! I only wish it was easier to work with. Heating up the bottle does little good to get it out by drops. Scooping and trying to blend doesn't work very well either. I'll still work on my methods as I really like this EO, tho.

Rating: What a wonderful surprise to me! This is my first encounter with Benzoin apart from Friar's Balsam and benzoin swabs . I expected an antiseptic smell and am delighting in the wonderful mellow warm scent slightly reminiscent of buttered vanilla ... if there is such a thing. I am looking forward to experimenting with various scent combinations.

Rating: This is one of my all time absolute favorites, and so I end up putting it in almost EVERYTHING! It's very sweet and has awesome staying power in a perfume blend. It's very thick, so I usually end up mixing it with jojoba oil and using it that way rather than going to the trouble of warming the bottle.
By:Lauretta, San Diego, California Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 19-Jun-2010
Rating: I can't afford vanilla EO and got this as a substitute for the time being. I can't compare it to the real thing, but it sure smells like vanilla to me! I do wish NDA would package it differently since I had to remove the built-in dropper to get it out of the bottle. Even after warming, it was still hard for me to work with and pretty much impossible to get the dropper I used completely clean. It mixes into soap fine, but is not so easy to mix into liquid oil. I just bought some Peru Balsam, another vanilla-like essential oil, from NDA and can't wait to try it. It's not thick like benzoin and is steam-distilled, which I prefer over solvent extraction.

Rating: Amazing resin! I would like to thank Tiffany for providing advice re: applying neat on skin. I had some sort of stubborn dermatitis-type reaction on my knuckle area. The resin's goey viscosity provided an effective barrier to allow my skin to completely heal over wonderfully and quickly. Plus, I am aware of its therapeutic benefits. I am running low on this sample and I will be buying a larger one so I can make a healing ointment out of this - that way I don't need to keep gently heating it every time I need it.

Rating: Perhaps my benzion has aged a little but it reminds of cream soda! I use it in balms and solid pufumes as a preservative and fixative, It really holds the essential oils in and they are stronger smelling and don't fade easily. A little seems to go a long way.

Rating: I'm in love! Such a complex, wonderful scent! As previous reviews have stated, it's pretty thick. I put it in a hot water bath while I got the rest of my ingredients ready. When it came time to add the essential oils to my soap it was easy to pour and measure.
By:Amy, Sept-Iles, Quebec Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Nov-2005
Rating: I absolutely love the smell. I do find it difficult to work with because of the thick viscosity. I will have to try a hotter hot water bath the next time. I think I had a heavy hand when I used it in my product recipe because it is difficult to measure due to the gooey-ness. I recommend not to add too much just in case you are prone to sensitivity (you can always add more later if it's not strong enough).

Rating: This benzoin is great, it really gives a warmth and sweetness behind the stronger scents of a product. I tried it in a beeswax-cocoa butter lotion bar, with Sweet Orange Essential Oil, and everyone who tries it just wants to eat it. At first when I made the lotion bar I thought I couldn't notice the benzoin, but after making the same product without it, the sweetness of the orange was gone and I realized how much the Benzoin had contributed. Can't wait to try the same thing with a lemon-scented cocoa butter lotion bar. Wonderful price, also.

Rating: This Benzoin is gorgeous. It instantly warms up any blend. It definitely reminds me of vanilla, without the sweetness. I wish it came with a different dispenser since the reducer cap does not have a purpose since the resin is so viscous. This oil will be an invaluable component in my blends in the upcoming chilly months. Great price too!

Rating: I love this oil from NDA. It's definitely thick and needs to be warmed up in hot water ahead of time but it's worth the few seconds extra wait. This is warm, sweet (but not sickening sweet), vanilla like. I use it blended with several of my CP Soaps and lotions.

Rating: Benzoin has at first a styrene, plastic-y note that I find oddly pleasing. It deepens to the smell of poplar buds and lingers over the course of a day, fading slowly to a powdery-floral and musky scent with undertones of clean skin. A perfect bridge to other aromatics in a blend, it also makes them seem stronger. Your benzoin is a nearly aways a must-have in my compositions.
(For perfume makers: It may take awhile to dissolve in alcohol and some may settle, so be prepared to warm the solution and add more ethanol if needed. Cleanup is aided by the use of acetone as the residue can be gummy.)

Rating: It just so happens I ordered Benzoin along with Labdanum on my last order. I had no idea they would smell so much a like, with the Labdanum being the more potent of the two, and the Benzoin being the sweeter. I was happy with the over-all sweet vanilla aroma of the Benzoin, but probably wouldn't have bought two oils that so closely resembled eachother. If I would have known ahead of time, I would have picked the Benzoin over the Labdanum. That being said, I think if I smelled the Labdanum independently, I would have probably mistaken it for the Benzoin oil. Both are very thick, and like the other reviews say, don't even bother with trying to use with the reducer cap.
