Botanical Name: Boswellia serrata

Main Constituents:
a-Thujene: 62.82%

Plant Part: Resin

Origin: India

Processing Method: Steam Distilled

Description / Color / Consistency: A thin, colorless to pale yellow liquid.

Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A base note with a medium aroma, Boswellia serrata has a warm and spicy, woody balsamic aroma that is distinct from Somalian/Middle Eastern Frankincense. Its pungent aroma is noticeably different and lacks the smokey notes of the Carterii variety.

Blends With: Basil, Bergamot, Cardamom, Cedarwood, Chamomile, Cinnamon Bark, Clary Sage, Coriander, Geranium, Myrrh and Vanilla.

Product Abstract: Frankincense originates from a small scraggly but hardy tree indigenous to the Middle East, which is small with abundant pinnacle leaves and white or pale pink flowers. The resin begins as a fragrant sticky milky-white liquid that flows from the trunk of the tree when cut. The dried tears are collected, and the resin is then distilled, producing the precious oil. The resin is known as olibanum, derived from the Arabic al-luban or 'that which results from milking', referring to the milky sap. It is used as incense, and has been traded for 5,000 years. Widely used in ancient Egypt, it was one of the ingredients used in the holy oil described in the Talmud. Frankincense was brought back to Europe by Frankish Crusaders (Frank-incense), and the oil is still highly prized today in the perfumery industry, and widely used in the manufacturing of skin-care products.

Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

Very Pleased with this Frankincense (Boswellia serrata) I have been using it for the past 6 years, since 2015 in CP Soap along with diffusing. Great for the price.

I absolutely love this product. The smell, color, and texture are perfect. My favorite thing about New Directions Aromatics is that they include the GC/MS sheets on their products. I highly recommend them and will continue to order from them for my aromatic needs!

I wanted to like this, because at the price, how could you not?! Oh, I could not. It has the same very strong "urea" smell of very cheap incense. It is actually revolting to me and I cannot return it quickly enough. I can't even blend this terrible stink away. I am confounded by all the good reviews. This smells nothing like any Frankincense I have ever encountered, and not in a good way.

I found this to be a very satisfying Frankincense. True, it doesn't have that powerfully clean feeling that other (much more expensive) Frankincense EOs may have, but undiluted this EO can still deliver. I use it in many of my aroma blends and find it to be just the right touch of an old world feel. At this price, I thought it was worth trying out, and wasn't disappointed.

Good quality, this frankincense is not so 'cheap' smelling as the price may suggest, very flexible oil, can be easily blended into almost anything to give that special uplifting something. highly recommended, its just as good as my somalian frankincense that I got from another site at double the price, if not more

I was a little skeptical when I saw the low price of this oil. After reading reviews I decided to get it for my dog's tumor. I also ordered the Egyption frank. I do understand how everyone says that the Indian frank does not have as a refined or robust aroma as the Egyptian one, but I think it smells great! It's got a sharper more penetrating smell with piney and spicy tones. I really like having a variety of the same oil to expirement with in perfume blends. I've only been applying it to my dog's tumor for three days and it is already shrinking. I wasn't sure if it was going to work at all. It's pretty amazing! Thanks NDA !

This is another essential oil that I don't particularly care for the scent of, however I don't like frankincense essential oil in general. I will definitely buy again due to the quality oil and medicinal uses of this! I do recommend this.

I love this frankincense, I've had both varieties. And i agree with everyone the Egyptian is much more potent and robust. But the Indian is certainly nothing to complain about. We all know the Egyptian is much better but it comes with a very steep price, about 3 times exactly. I want to use this oil in CP soaps, that being said the Egyptian is not economical although i always like keeping a personal bottle.

I love this Frankincense from India. It's not the most pleasant , but for healing joint pain mixed with myrrh from India it's perfect. I will buy more when I run out. Mix it half and half in a lotion base until the lotion holds no more. It is strong and if you don't like it use less. It may even heal other aches or sores.

I rate this EO 5 stars for EO properties, but only 3 stars for scent -- average 4 stars. If you need an affordable frankincense EO for practical applications (for the purposes of my review, mainly skin treatments) this is fantastic. My only complaint is that its frankincensy smell is rather weak. it is not a very strong, quintessential frankincense. an analogy would be Mysore Sandalwood vs. Australia Sandalwood -- the former is quintessential, rich, and what you think of when the scent is mentioned; the latter is still identifiable, but lacking the richness and complexity of what we come to expect. overall, I still do love it. i use it in blends as well, so the scent aspect is less concerning to me.

I love this oil. I'm using it on my face and neck twice a day, blended with jojoba and lavender. I'm also using it on my husband's fragile, warfarin-damaged skin and it is the first time we've seen an obvious improvement in healing scratches and breaks from one day to the next with anything we've tried. Plus the cotton swabs I used to apply it on him went in a small trash can in the family room and made me wonder why I bother burning incense. The scent has grown on me tremendously over this past week of using it. I'm ordering a larger bottle.

Frankincense India doesn't particularly smell as sweet or as appealing as the Frankincense resins I purchased else weird. This oil gives a very sharp woody smell that can be a bit off putting. I don't really mind the oil, but it's definitely better when blended with something a bit sweeter and more uplifting. I suggest getting a small sample of the oil before purchasing in bulk.

Wow, I didn't expect an oil like frankincense, that always seemed so exotic and mysterious to me, to be so inexpensive!! I'm not sure I was even planning to buy any, but the price was so good, I couldn't resist!Even the Egyptian is affordably priced, and I'll probably try that one, too, eventually. Since this one's from India, I'm assuming it's most like what the wise men from the East brought to Jesus at His birth, and so I was most curious about it. Not sure how to use it yet, but it smells really good with citrus oils in bath salts.

I loved the Egyptian Frankincense when I tried it, and thought I'd give this one from India a try as well. They are very different and I really don't like this one: it has an unpleasant medicinal, cloying quality, to me, compared to the gorgeously clean, austere spice of the Egyptian variety. Ah well. I tried something new!

Frankincense figures largely in several of my products, and I needed an affordable source. With a lighter, more brilliant aroma, this variety works very well in my best-sellers, having just as much healing power as the more expensive oils I have worked with. I use this in an analgesic rub, and I have been getting excellent results with conditions as varied as chronic knee pain subsequent to replacement surgery; bursitis, and swollen joints, and even a client with fibromyalgia has seen significant relief with this oil. I am going to be a long time and frequent customer. Thanks, NDA!

I was raised around the odor of frankincense, and while I know this isn't the best species for that "frankincense" odor, I have an appreciation for lighter, sweeter, airier frankincense notes and usually refer to them with the "other" frankincense name to differentiate between the two major varieties: that name being olibanum, of course. So that said, I was a bit disapointed with this oil. The odor is not as tenacious as I had expected...even absent, actually. In fact, this smelled a bit like an EXTREMELY diluted frankincense oil than the pure thing. Again, this is a budget-friendly frankincense and I didn't expect to be sniffing magical, expensive essential oil at a lower cost, but still. Aside from that caveat, the oil DOES seem to have the wonderful theapeutic effects of most olibanum oils I've used, and it IS a great price. All in all, I'm not sure if I'd reccomend this exactly, but I wouldn't discourage someone from purchasing it, either...

Cheap oil , stinky oil, inferior oil No similarity with Boswellia carteri. I dont understand ,how most people give here 5 stars ?!?

New Directions Aromatics Response:

Please note that this is a different botanical specie of Frankincense than the Boswellia carteri and therefore will have a different scent. This is a less expensive alternative to the Boswellia carteri which suits certain customers and their intended uses for this product. Customers may wish to try our Egyptian Frankincense which is the Boswellia carteri but it does cost substantially more.

I find the frereana sweeter than the Egyptian, but the difference in cost is too good to pass up. I find frankincense to be one of my more useful EOs. It's good for rubbing on the chest and sinuses as an expectorant, putting in a nebulizer to help with sleep, rubbing between the palms and inhaling in times of anger, sadness, anxiety or grief... it seems to have the ability to dissolve negative energy, be it with mental or physical health.

This is one precious oil indeed ! Its both wispy and mysterious, it feels like a long corridor ; at first you notice the wall solvent odor but with wooden tones, much like the texture of the smell of fir. Then you find out that its just more than that, its variety of tone is amazing. This is an exeptional oil in terms of quality, very thin, very volatile ! Again pleasantly surprised by the quality of products from india, recommended strongly for skin applications, does not overpower other oils. If I was to describe this one in one word it would be : Pure Light.

Even for a Frereana, this price is amazing, and the oil is truly lovely! I am so very, very happy with this frankincense. There are times when I think I may like the Frereana frankincense even better than the Carteri. Blasphemy, I know, but the Frereana is so uplifting and airy, while still maintaining that wonderful mysterious spiritual Frankincense-ness. It's still earthy, but it has a good deal of air in it as well -- a useful oil when remaining grounded isn't really so much your problem as getting off the ground in the first place is. And of course, the far lower price means that you don't have to scrimp and save and stress and nervously count the drops every time you think that you really could use a bit of frankincense in something. Go ahead - throw some in the bath! Spritz it around the room! Toss some more in that diffuser blend! Forget about those fragrance oil imitations: you can afford to use this one. Real Frankincense is good for your soul.

I purchased this oil primarily as a base-fixative. As far as being a fixative, it'll probably work out ok, but as a base I am sorely, unimpressed. I was looking for something stronger and I may have to mix in a little Vetiver & Myrrh in order to get it. Some of my guys are secure enough to wear non-earthy colognes, however when I'm actually going for that earthy scent what I end up with in this version of Frankincense is a soapy smell. Lastly, as a base the scent dissipates far too quickly for my liking, two hours and it's all over. As a reference I use a 10-15% EO standard in my cologne formulations.
