Botanical Name: Lavandula officinalis

Main Constituents:
Linalool: 29.5%
Linalyl Acetate: 36.1%

Plant Part: Flowers

Origin: France

Processing Method: Steam Distillation

Description / Color / Consistency: A thin, clear, colourless to pale yellow liquid.

Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A top note of strong aroma, Lavender 40/42 has a fresh, herbaceous, floral scent with a woody, balsamic undertone.

Blends With: Bay, Bergamot, Chamomile, Clary Sage, Geranium, Jasmine, Lemon, Mandarin, Orange, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Pine, Thyme, Rosemary, Rosewood, and Ylang-ylang.

Product Abstract: The Lavender plant grows to about one meter in height and produces long thin purple-blue flowers. The entire plant is covered with oil glands, which are in the star-shaped hairs that cover the plant. Lavender has been used since ancient times, and the Romans added lavender to their bath water, hence the name from the Latin lavare, 'to wash'. Lavender 40/42 Essential Oil has the most floral scent of all the Lavenders and is a blend of various lavenders to achieve an economical product. While the vast majority of Lavender 40/42 in the market is synthetically compounded, our Lavender 40/42 is comprised of 100% natural constituents and is blended to match the ideal percentage of Linalool and Linalyl acetate esters, to release the best of Lavender's floral notes. Though this oil is generally not used for therapeutic applications, it is often the Lavender of choice for soaps, candles, perfumes, and cosmetics.

Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

Very nice lavender! I typically hate any sort of commercial lavender scent, even essential oil isn't my fave, however, this strikes a nice balance between floral and medicinal. Plan to use quite a bit in different blends, so the price can't be beaten!

I love this oil. I recommend this supplier, all their products are of the highest quality. The only reason I buy from another supplier is if New Directions Aromatics don't have what I need but otherwise prices, quality, variety, and shipping are excellent. I just wish there were some discount offers from time to time my other supplier offers 20% sometimes which is great but in general, I love all the products from New Directions Aromatics.

I've been trying various NDA's Lavenders since discovering this site and I just can not say enough, how happy I am with ALL my purchases. Even the fragrance oils I usually throw in on each order have been happy buys! This lavender is, so far, my go-to. The scent is outstanding and the price just can't be beat. I have to say, even though I previously commented on not 'getting' all the hype nor the extreme extra cost of the Population Lavender, I threw in a 3.3oz bottle on this last order. I've now had a chance to get to know & use this lavender. The hype is warranted. LOL. It is gorgeous! I love ALL the EO & FO I've ordered from NDA but this Population Lavender is PHENOMENAL! I'd say it is worth the extra cost, for those on the fence as I was. Of all the lavenders I have (and it is coming up on hoarding...lol) NDAs Population is a 'luxe' product. Behaves exceptionally well in the few things I've tried it in. (I only do body butters, body oils, and personal hair care) The fragrance of this lavender is positively intoxicating. A couple drops in the heater registers and my home smells like I have been working with just-harvested lavender. That freshly-crushed bud smell you know? There's really nothing like it. Except Population! I've adored EVERYTHING I've purchased here. I'm chomping at the bit waiting for my current order to get here. It's smaller bottles of the other lavenders I've yet to try. English, French... etc) SO excited! Thank YOU, New Directions!

It's the midst of Coronapocalypse 2020 and I ran out of Lavender EO. I thought lockdown would be a marvelous time to test 4 Lavenders I'd not yet tried. Here is my review of each -- just the scent profiles, not how they mix -- with comparative notes for those uncertain about which to try in 2020. [ 40/42 ] "Floral-Herbacious" This is a great 40/42 and strikes a good balance between floral and fruity, with just enough camphor to give it that "herbal" character and make it feel robust and consistent. And the camphor, to my nose, leans the slightest bit toward minty, keeping it herbal without being too medicinal. I'm actually a little surprised by the nuance achieved in this as a 40/42. Definitely smells higher quality than other 40/42s I've tried before. Which is why despite being a long-time NDA customer, this is the first time I've tried their 40/42. In terms of quintessential lavender character, this is probably my go-to for affordability from now on. [ Greek ] "Floral-Sweet" The Greek lavender is my favorite. It smells the most like the dried lavender buds you can put into satchels, or if edible-grade, in tea and baked goods. It has a rather fine character, feels a bit delicate and refined, but still fresh; not matronly. Undiluted drydown on my skin gave a slightly musty note but still an overall fresh, sweet, identifiably lavender smell. A bit green, but not wet. More floral than fruity, but the sweetness smells almost-but-not-quite-ripe. Compared to the 40/42, I think the Greek is just a little fresher, real-plant, "I just got it at the Farmer's Market this morning" smelling. It's best to stand on its own, I think. [ South African ] "Fruity-Dry" At first sniff, the South African lavender confused me. It has a ripe fruit impression that kind of steals the spotlight on its opening. But sniff it a bit more, and let the tiny bit of camphor even it out, and it actually reminds me of a dry wine. Like it smells ripe and fruity at first, but is actually more mellow and fine. This reminds me the most of French Lavender. It's got a delicate coyness about it, like it might overpower or disappear under other scents. Whereas the 40/42 can stand alone or be part of a blend, confident in its quintessential "lavenderness," The South African Lavender probably needs to be the main focus in a blend, or if on its own, needs to be enhanced a little bit. It smells beautiful, but is just on the shier side. [ Bulgarian ] "Fruity-Sweet" The Bulgarian Lavender has the least camphor, which gives it more fruity/floral nuance, but surprisingly, is my least favorite of the 4 I am comparing. I personally like my lavender to have an herbaceous character -- it's what makes it feel "fresh" to me, and also kind of helps with the consistency of the smell both over time and in blends. Don't get me wrong! The Bulgarian lavender is gorgeous.. It smells like living lavender in the sun, still moist immediately following a rain. Like, just sniffing the bottle by itself, stimulates the most in my imagination. I still love it as aromatherapy in a diffuser, but on my skin, It is just a bit too fruity. Its undiluted drydown is musty and just a little indolic -- like wet soil or an old basement. Whereas the Greek lavender also has a bit of a musty drydown, it's not as "moist" or "wet" as the Bulgarian one. This Bulgarian lavender would probably shine best in a blend where you need the sweetness of lavender, but without the camphorus, herbacious notes. If you're going for more of a classic, quintessential lavender that stands on its own, I'd suggest one of the others.

I hate to give this product only two stars. But as with the other reviewer I am also not happy with the price increase. I do love the way this lavender smells and I use it in many of my products. Unfortunately because of the cost I will definitely be using it less.

I love this product but am not happy with the change of price. I bought 11 pounds for $278.51 in 2017. It then went up to $500.39. Thats almost a 100% increase in price in 2 years. Going to have to swap my scents as this is too large of a jump to justify.

Unfortunately this is my least favorite essential oil. It does not smell of lavender and carries a chemical undertone. I had to check my receipt again just to make sure I didn’t order the fragrance oil. Sorry ND this 40/42 is a no go for me.

New Directions Aromatics Response:

Hi Sha, thank you for your feedback. At NDA, we pride ourselves on offering pure, natural products of the highest quality. We kindly ask that you please contact our Customer Service Supervisor to help us investigate further in order to determine whether or not there might be a problem with the batch. Have a great day!

VERY satisfied with this lavender. I have ordered from multiple different companies trying to find a lavender that smells great AND is reasonably priced. This is by far the best. It does not smell synthetic. Perfectly sweet, floral and herbaceous. Sticks well in my CP soaps and blends nicely in my other sprays. Not necessarily what I use for more medicinal applications, but it's perfect for what I need.

I keep coming back for this oil because I love it. Not only is the price fantastic, but the aroma is pleasant, just the right balance of medicinal and sweet floral. It works great in my cold process and hot process soaps and also in my lotions, however it does thicken liquid soap considerably, so I would not recommend using this in liquid soap.

Ordered a huge bottle of this oil to take advantage of the price drop, but after reading more into the standardization process of the oil, I'm a bit concerned about how natural it actually is. The oil smells floral, as the description notes--the floral pleasant comes from the Linalyl acetate added to the oil. Standardizing the oil gives the oil a consistent floral scent, but the naturalness of the Linalyl acetate added is questionable. If you're concerned about the naturalness of your lavender oil, consider other lavender oils. I prefer the Spanish Lavender Oil.

This is the first time I have ordered from ND and I am very impressed. I had not ordered the 40/42 before and right after I got it my daughter-in-law called and said my son was having trouble sleeping and could I blend some oil. Since 40/42 was listed as not being as therapeutic as other Lavenders I was a little concerned but it smelled so wonderful I went ahead and blended it with some Bergamot, and a touch of Chamomile and it worked great. However, with your great price on the Bulgarian right now I've ordered some of that to try since it is a higher grader therapeutically. Can't wait to get it. I loved the smell of the 40/42 so anxious to compare it with the Bulgarian and French ( I ordered some of that too)

Probably not the normal use for this on this page but I am using the lavender oil & dried lavender flowers as an ant repellent. Food grade diatomaceous earth around all the baseboards & across the window sills & patio door topped with a liberal sprinkling of dried lavender flowers. A few drops of lavender oil into the tracks of the windows & I think that I will be the only ant-free unit in the building! Bonus? Doesn't harm my 2 footed or furry footed family.

I used to buy the Barreme lavender (please, please, please bring this back NDA!) & decided to try 40/42 as an alternative. I was disappointed because this is a very sweet, powdery floral and I prefer a more "green" lavender like Barreme. Works well in CP soap, though, and also as a bug bite/sting treatment.

Love this in my CP soaps and bath bombs. the scent is stronger than expected and loved by all my customers. One of my customers wont even use the soap because she would rather sniff it all day! Smells like the real thing.

Lavender 40/42 is used in my CP soaps. I love this lavender EO. The scent is beautiful. It combines well with so many other essential oils but is also fantastic on its own. Thanks!

A standard lavender oil, a bit more on the herbaceous and sharp/camphorous side of things. However that initial harshness seems to be fading with time. Great value.

This blend has a more camphorous smell to it than most lavenders. Great price though.
