Botanical Name: Commiphora erythraea

Plant Part: Resin

Origin: Egypt

Processing Method: Steam Distilled

Description / Color / Consistency: A thin, yellow to reddish liquid.

Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A middle note with a medium aroma, Opoponax Essential Oil has a warm, spicy aroma with herbaceous notes.

Blends With: Frankincense, Sandalwood, Benzoin, Cypress, Juniper, Mandarin, Geranium, Patchouli, Thyme, Peppermint, Lavender and Pine.

Product Abstract: The Opoponax tree has a branching stem growing about 1 to 3 feet high, which is thick and rough near the base. Its leaves are pinnate, with long petioles and large serrate leaflets. The oleoresin is obtained by cutting into the stem at the base. The juice that exudes dries in the sun and forms the resin from which the Essential Oil is obtained. Though it is sometimes found in tears, it is more usually seen in small, irregular pieces. It is then cleaned and processed by solvent extraction to produce the thick, resinous oil. A cousin of Myrrh, Opoponax has been a component of incense and perfume since biblical times and is more likely the Myrrh spoken of in The Song of Solomon; but unlike Myrrh, Opoponax has a sweeter, softer and longer lasting aroma, very different from the sharp freshness of Myrrh Oil. Also known as Sweet Myrrh, it is commonly used in Chinese medicine.

Cautions: This oil has phototoxic properties and exposure to the sun must be avoided after application to the skin. Due to their presence, please consult a physician prior to using this oil. Dilute well before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping), be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

I got this one because it has such great reviews and because I read that it was sweet myrrh, and I ADORE myrrh (especially the Egyptian kind). However, I found that this one was not nearly as delicious smelling as my myrrh, even though it has a similar fragrance. I find Myrrh to be warmer, sweeter and much more versatile. So especially considering that opopanax is more expensive than myrrh, I'd recommend going with the Egyptian myrrh if you're looking for that general scent

I've never smelt something like this opoponax. It's sweet, yet soft.. and sharp at the same time. It has herbacious and medicinal notes. Something is in the smell that reminds me of cellery/cucumber. What an interesting oil! Oponax is used extensively in perfume.

Ah, the almost sickening sweet smell of opoponax...I use this one in a blend, as it is a useful oil, but I find it too much by itself. A great perfume ingredient, I think it can tie other oils together. The 1/6 oz bottle is the perfect size to experience it without breaking the bank and is more than enough to experiment with. Thanks for making this oil so affordable!

Not to be confused with Cassie (Acacia farnesiana) which is also called Opopanax. Use for amenorrhoea, arthritis, asthma, chapped & cracked skin, eczema, haemorrhoids, leucorrhoea, loss of appetite, mature complexion, pruritis, thrush, wounds, wrinkles. (Also known as Bisabol Myrrh, Commiphora erythraea variety glabrascens, Sweet Myrrh.) Good price and excellent quality.
