Product Abstract: Native to Central America and Mexico, Vanilla is a perennial climbing vine that can grow up to 25 meters (82 feet) tall. When cultivated its deep trumpet-shaped flowers must be hand-pollinated; in nature, hummingbirds do the work. The green capsules or fruit are picked, and the immature vanilla pod or bean is fermented and dried to turn it into a fragrant brown vanilla bean. Our oleoresin is the superior bourbon variety; that it is 10 fold relates to its concentration. One of the most popular flavors in the world, it is used in cuisine, cosmetics, and perfumery. However, the constituent, vanillin makes it difficult to use in soap making and candles. Because of reduced availability due to regional conflicts, the price of Vanilla has risen to the point of most absolutes. Nonetheless, the true oleoresin is recognized as being well worth the price.

Rating: Wonderful... I use this in my body butter. It does change the color of my mixtures, but that's okay. A darker color to go with the warm vanilla scent is okay by me. It's a bit pricey, but vanilla is that way. It does have a scent close to an extract, but this is so much better. A great buy.

Rating: I love this Vanilla Oleoresin! I used 5 drops with 25 Sweet Orange in 8 oz of handmade cream for my grandson, he loves it! It was perfect to enhance yet mellow out the orange. It does somewhat have the scent of vanilla extract yet it's more "vanilla-y". Wonderful scent!

Rating: Smells amazing with orange and cinnamon! But it's not oil soluble.

Rating: This is such a nice oil. It is so sweet smelling. It smells like heaven in a bottle to me. I really do love this oil. I can't help myself and I keep smelling the bottle, it smells so nice. I have used this is a number of different blends and it is perfect. I do not see why anyone would say a bad things about this oil. It is fantastic as far as I am concerned. I hope NDA continues to carry this oil for a long time!!!!

Rating: A little bit of this goes a long way! I use it in my melt & pour soaps, and I have to say that on its own it's a bit disappointing-smells like extract-but mixed with other scents it is quite yummy.

Rating: If you like the smell of vanilla (and who doesn't?!), you'll love this. Fairly thick in consistency, but not hard to work with at all.

Rating: I'll have to admit, when I first opened the bottle that I bought almost a year ago (bought a big one), I was a bit disappointed that it smelled more like extract. But I said what the hey and gave it a try. I make melt and pour soaps and so far have not been unhappy with the results I get. I have one recipe "Old Fashioned Oatmeal Cookie" that I use this in and I swear you would think you are in your grandmother's kitchen with her making cookies instead of in my kitchen where I'm making soap. My customers just love the way this soap smells. And this is one time the fact it's brown is truly a plus. I also make a lavender and vanilla soap that is one of my top sellers - using this very oil.
On another note, I don't know if anyone has mentioned it previously, but Vanilla is an orchid. We raise orchids and have about a dozen vanilla orchids in our greenhouse. As the bee that pollinates this particular orchid is native to Mexico, if we ever get a bloom, we will have to hand pollinate it - which is what they do in Madagascar where vanilla is a huge industry - and why it is so expensive. Oh, and the blooms only last one day. Love your stuff NDA.

Rating: I purchased this oil before I realized it wasn't oil soluble, so I was unable to use it in the products that I anticipated. It smells (from the bottle) like vanilla extract you cook with and that wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I have not used in in anything yet, so hopefully I will be surprised by how wonderful it is at that time. Until then...I'm not sure I would purchase this particular oil again.

Rating: This vanilla smells incredible. The main problem is the fact that it's not soluble in oil, and I don't use ethanol in any of my preparations, so it doesn't work well for me. For that reason, I prefer the vanilla absolute, which smells very similar to this one (warm, a little spicy, and sweet but not too sweet) but seems to work much better in oils. I definitely prefer either of these to any of the vanilla FOs that I've smelled, which are all way too strong to mix undiluted with any EO perfume mixtures I've made and which definitely smell "fake"

Rating: P.S. I'm an idiot - it does say it in the description. I must have been using an old reference for the NDA site (my notes). This oleoresin is still a disappointment, especially compared to the quality usually offered by NDA.
Rating: I ran out of my usual supplier's vanilla oleoresin at the last minute, and since NDA has a faster processing/shipping time, I decided to try this vanilla. Total disappointment. It smells like vanilla extract used in cooking (my husband said "Kalhua" when he first smelled it, just as another reviewer mentioned) and is not oil soluble. It's not even oil friendly. Since it's not in the description, I wish I had read the reviews before ruining a batch of 300 lip balms two days before a show. This is the first time I've been disappointed in any NDA product in 5+ years, but this oleoresin is so bad, if it were my first order, I'd never use NDA again.
Rating: Nice and Warm scent, great for lotion and cream.
By:Moira, Orleans, Ontario Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Nov-2005
Rating: This EO smells incredible--just like true vanilla extract, not the fake vanilla-inspired fragrance and flavour oils. Keep in mind, though, that it's water soluble, not oil soluble, as per the MSDS. Good for lotions and soaps, but it's a pity I won't be able to use it in balms and body butters.
By:Marie, Calgary, Alberta Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Nov-2005
Rating: When preparing food, I add sugar to sweeten something. And after working with some eo's I was like, I need a "sugar" for some of my blends. Vanilla oleoresin is my "sugar" for my natural bath and body products. It adds a lovely natural design in cp soap that quite pleased me, but the top stayed one color, so it looked like slices of iced cake.

Rating: I'll admit I'm new to soapmaking and having made soap with other vanilla EO I was eagerly looking forward to receiving this oil, however, maybe its me, but I just don't like this. It smells exactly like Vanilla extract from the store, I find the smell overwhelming and it colors everything a mucky brown. I was following another recipe so, again, maybe its me, but I wouldn't buy again.

Rating: Lovely fragrance but product will not mix with oils (sweet almond or sunflower). It was in the reviews, but I did not read every review. Aren't solubility issues usually disclosed in the product description? I'm a little disappointed.
Rating: It took me some time to figure out how to use this product. It is deceptively strong in scent. At first I thought I needed a lot of it in my soaps for it to make an impact, but I've since learned that I need much less than I thought. The scent of Vanilla is popular with my customers, though not so much with myself. For value and quality, this is a great product.

Rating: i was working on an oil perfume and was not liking the outcome, it was very strong. i added two to three drops of this oil and it calmed down the scent a lot. it made it more warm and relaxing weather then overpowering and worthy of a headache. thanks vanilla 10 fold haha
Rating: I was amazed at how thick Vanilla 10 Fold was. But it smelled heavenly - like I just baked a batch of sugar cookies! It also blended well with the shea butter and made the most amazing, fast selling lip balm when blended with pepperment and wintergreen EO! Thanks for great EO's!

Rating: How hard it is to find a quality Vanilla Essential oil that doesn\'t cost a fortune. Well, here it is! New Directions Aromatics Vanilla Essential oil is terrific and the price is right. I\'ve bought it three times and have never been disappointed. It\'s rich, great vanilla aroma and affordable.

Rating: I used this to make vanilla scented sugar scrubs and it worked beautifully. I also mixed a bit of vanilla with a bit of orange to make a sort of "creamsicle" scent and it was a hit!
Rating: WOW! The strongest smelling EO in my entire order! I wonder what Vanilla 20 Fold would smell like? This is the truest scent of Vanilla I have ever come across - it is not over sickly sweet and also carries a depth that I can't quite put my finger on... but it is absolutely lovely! Since you will not need too much of this EO to scent your products with, which makes the price even more of a bargain!
By:Christine, Burnaby, British Columbia Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 09-Nov-2005
Rating: Smells great, just as vanilla should. It also gives soaps and butters a "french vanilla" tan color. Does take more EO to scent then some of the other EO's I have purchased, but it is only the 10 fold, and for the price, it is certainly worth it.

Rating: If you are using this to make cold process soap, please don't. It will not turn out. I made a large batch of soap which I divided in half. In half I put the vanilla 10 fold and in the other half orange and clove essential oil. The half with the vanilla seized up and became hard instantly. The half with orange and clove essential oil came out nicely. So I know it wasn't my soap. Also make sure you try the products from NDA right away or you maybe stuck with a product you don't like.
Rating: Great scent. Ideal for adding to body cream.

Rating: I got hooked on EOs when I decided to make all natural cleaning products for the house cleaning business I started. Then I started buying the cosmetic bases for personal use so I could get that much more out of the oils. So, I wasn't too eager to spend this much more for something I really don't need. I'm so glad I did. Vanilla can make a flat combinations of oil just round out so richly. If it's getting too botanical smelling or too masculine it adds the perfect amount of sweet. I have found that no matter what I'm mixing Lavender or Vanilla always fills in what's missing.

Rating: I was afraid to try this essential oil because of a review that said it made lotions smell like alchohol, but I am glad I tried it. It smells wonderful in my butter recipe and gave a great color. Most important is the price, much more affordable than absolutes. I am very happy with this vanilla, I will now buy a big bottle.
By:Monique, Pembroke Pines, Florida Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 25-May-2008
Rating: I used this oil abundently in CP soap and my results were good. The soaps are smooth and creamy (no problems with separation at all) and the scent really sings now that the bars are in the curing stage. This oil will turn your products dark brown...which is okay, I like natural colorants.

Rating: I will jump on the "little goes a long way" bandwagon too! In my diffuser, most of my other oils take about five to six drops to get a good solid scent to spread around. This stuff? Two, MAYBE three drops and you are good to go! To be honest, I wasn't really sure about it when I first smelled it in the bottle...it smelled just like the extract you cook with and I thought it might be too much. But once I put it in my diffuser, it smelled terrific. Great stuff!
Rating: This vanilla oil is amazing! I agree with the others when they say a little goes a long way... It is strong and beautiful... Quite frankly, it smells so good every time I use it I really want to taste it! (However, that is not a good idea.) This a a great price for a great oil... I recommend it to all vanilla lovers :)

Rating: Smells fantastic - exactly like it should. One note of caution: don't judge the scent holding the bottle right under your nose, or you'll get the alcoholic smell mentioned by another reviewer. Out of the bottle, this is just right.

Rating: Oh, WOW!!!
Like the majority of the population, I find vanilla to be a pleasant, comforting smell, but it's never been one of my desert-island-five scents. Until now, that is. This vanilla completely knocked my socks off. I went nuts and made enough products to use the entire bottle the first day after receiving it and my only regret is that I didn't purchase a bigger one. Fortunately, there are a few drops stuck in the bottom of the bottle, which should keep me company until my next shipment arrives.
Bravo, New Directions! Yet another product that surpasses all my expectations!
By:Marith, Berea, West Virginia Top ReviewerDate: Loyal Customer Since: 20-May-2007
Rating: This vanilla is wonderful. Not overly sweet like some vanillas I've smelled. The scent right from the bottle has a slight alcohol aroma, but once you put it on, it completely dissipates. The only complaint is that I tried to mix it with vetiver and it took A LOT of vanilla to blend well with the 3 drops of vetiver I used. But, I was able to get the scent I wanted.

Rating: What a delight and what a super buy. This is the best price hands down that I've found and I've done a lot of searching. Your site is a Godsend!
Rating: I\'m disappointed that my experience did not compare with others here. It had trouble in CP soap, which in a stable recipe re-liquefied in the mold long after trace (in fact, I used it in half a batch and another EO in the other, and the other half of the batch behaved beautifully). The scent was kind of like a dirty, more alcoholic, Kahlua, and I can\'t for the life of me tell the difference between the product and the more upscale (but still significantly cheaper) grocery store Madagascar vanilla extracts. The CP soap I used it in still has a couple of weeks left to cure, and I will be delighted to prove myself wrong if curing brings out a vanilla scent. It gives lotion an alcoholic scent, and changed the consistency, but I can detect Vanilla in it. Overall, I\'m confused since so many reviewers reported a delightful vanilla scent that held its own in CP soap, and to be honest, this was not my experience at all. I\'ve been very happy with other oils bought from New Directions.
New Directions Aromatics Response:
Our Vanilla Essential Oil is produced from the Oleoresin. We use the finest quality Bourbon type beans and then concentrate it 10 fold.
Unfortunately, Vanilla Essential Oil is one of the more difficult essential oils to use in manufacturing. Producers of soap also tend to use different ratios of ingredients, and quite often different ingredients all-together. In situations where customers are experiencing different results than others, we recommend they ask other consumers on our forum. Quite often small changes can produce the desired results.
