Ascophyllum nodosum - a brown seaweed commonly known as knotted, knobbed or bladder wrack, or kelp - is one of many species which form part of the botanical order or algae.

Appearance: Greenish brown powder with a strong pungent odor.

Benefits: Seaweed Powder is a rich source of vitamins including vitamins B12 (not found in land plants), vitamin E, amino acids, minerals, trace elements, and other nutrients. Seaweed powder makes for an effective cleansing and exfoliating agent. When applied to the skin, Seaweed act as a powerful purifier that draws out impurities while imparting benefits to the skin. It helps to slough off dead skin cells from the surface of the skin which gives the skin a healthy, revitalized, and glowing appearance. Seaweed contains fatty acids, which makes it suitable for use on irritated skin as it will help retain skin's moisture levels, and alleviate chapping, cracking and roughness caused by dryness of the skin. It can also be used on oily and acne-prone skin. Seaweed Powder is suitable for all skin types.

Application: Seaweed Powder can be used in face masks, body wraps, soap making, body scrubs and bath powders.

Caution: Persons with an allergy to iodine should avoid using this product. This powder has a strong pungent odor that some may find offensive, so test product before using.

Seaweed Face Mask Recipe:
Combine 1 tbsp of seaweed powder to 2 tbsp of water and 1 tsp of vegetable glycerin to form a paste. Apply to the skin and leave on for about 10 minutes before washing off with warm water. Floral water or aloe vera gel juice can be substituted for water.

Seaweed Body Wrap Recipe:
Combine ½ cup seaweed powder, 3 tbsp jojoba oil and 2 drops of lavender oil in a bowl. Slowly add water while stirring the mixture until it forms into a paste. Apply paste to various parts of the body and cover with plastic wrap. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Floral water or aloe vera gel juice can be substituted for water.

I only wanted to add a quick review to just say that I LOVE LOVE the smell of seaweed. Maybe it is because my mum is french and I am used to the smell of the coast of northern France. But I add to a salt bath with no essential oils to mask the smell and lay in it with closed eyes imagining I am by the sea!!! it is amazing....... don't mask the smell. Take a deep breath of the sea.....

Ok, when I bought this product, I did not know what to use it for but...I added a teaspoon of powder to some cream base from NDA with grapefruit eo and I use it 2 -3 times a week and wow!, I love it. Fixing (a term here in Texas) to make a batch up for a hair mask and will be trying that soon. Cannot wait! NDA, I must say I LOVE YOUR PRODUCTS!!!

A powerhouse for masks and cleansing grains. You just have to experiment with your eo blend. Folks looking for a sea mask have to expect some smell, right?

Love seaweed powder! I use it in soap, face and body masks and it is great! My customers love it and I especially love it because it calms the eczema and hydrates my skin so well. I hope NDA will start to carry the Algae extract so I can add it to face creams too.

Pores? What pores? Mine appear so much smaller after using this mask just one time! I am going to be in the minority and say I didn't think this seaweed mask smelled terrible. I did add quite a few essential oils to it, so maybe it covered the natural scent completely. I didn't smell anything bad at all.

I did add more water than was originally suggested, because it didn't smooth onto my skin like it should.

Here's what I did (I have sensitive, mostly dry skin, with large pores in the T-zone. I am starting to show fine wrinkles, etc):

1 Tbsp seaweed powder
2 Tbsp water
1 tsp aloe vera juice
1 tsp almond oil
2 drops Neroli oil
4 drops Bergamot oil
4 drops Pink Grapefruit oil
2 drops Myrrh

It tightened my face up nicely, without feeling too dry. Made my pores appear smaller, and my skin feel very soft. I'm sold!

Okay... so I'll be honest - this does not smell good. However, it works wonders if you add it to your bath salt or make a mask with 1/3 of this and 2/3 of a moisturizing clay. I'll be looking for new ways to use this interesting product.

I bought this powder a year ago and never thought to write a review til I read the others. I use it along with St. John's Wort and some other auyrvedic powders directly in my bath. I add some EO's in some epsom salts and I feel as if I am getting into a huge cup of tea...When I get out my skin feels so clean, fresh and exfoliated. This is unique for me because I have very dry skin. I recommend it highly. Tip: I use a fine mesh screen to "sift" it into the tub or else I find myself fighting little green clumps. : )

Oh my God! This powder makes an amazing facial mask. Very stong odor, not a bad one though. I blended with avocado oil and cucumber extract (and added a drop of cucumber melon FO, to tone down the seaweed scent). I tested it on myself and the next day at work everyone commented on how radiant my skin looked! Made my skin feel softer and look smoother. I have rosacea, and it wasn't as bad after just one application. This powder is very easy to work with and blends well. Not hard to scent over.

This was one the first things i tried once my shipment got here. I used a body scrub base with apricot shell exfolients, the seaweed powder, and some red current and thyme FO. After mixing all my ingredients, I must say, I loved this. My face felt amazing and refreshed, plus extremely clean but in a very natural way vs any chemical type of way. Made it soft and also tightened my skin while hyrdating. At first I got nervous when I saw the comments about the pungent smell and so forth, so I smelled it beforehand too, and it smelt amazing to me. Of course its not going to smell like peaches, but the smell is a bit undefinable and to me, I see it as a good scent, although the red current and thyme smell wasn't as strong as I'd have liked it to be, which may in part be due to the seaweed powder somewhat covering it, but not too much, which actually made it quite a nice balance of smell. Hope this helps =]

All of the reviews ranted and raved over this product. I understand why. I used a tablespoon with australian beige clay mixed with a tablespoon of aloe vera gel and my goodness! My face looked brighter, my forehead looked normal and I believe this is going to aid the clearance of my acne covered cheeks and chin. I have ceased going to the dermatologist because after 28 years of using acne medicines, my skin just cannot take another steroid cream, or antibiotic ointment. My skin is completely fried and I am trying to rejuvenate it and bring it back to some semblance of normalcy through the products offered on this website. I am happy to report that it is coming back after only a few days of using the wonderful non-clogging carrier oils and this seeweed. It is going to be a slow recovery, but fortunately, I have the time and would like to thank this company for offering an abundance of chemically-free products that nourish and enrich the priceless elements of ourselves--our skin, hair, nails, and well-being. Thank you New Directions!

A pound of seaweed is so much seaweed! The scent is really only strong when the powder is very wet so I found it troublesome only when mixing it into a paste and then again when rinsing it off. There's some good exfoliating action when you're removing the mask. I've only used it once with a little mud and some rose water, but already my acne-riddled, extremely unhappy face feels a hundred times better.

I'm giving this 5 stars based on how well it works...Definitely NOT because of the scent! LoL If you like seafood, it won't bother you as much...I HATE seafood, so I had to grin and bear it...It didn't make me break out, a little goes a long way, and it does improve the circulation. I just think I'll use it on my lower body next time, not so close to my nose!

GET THIS. Try and LOVE IT. It's amazing. Seriously it's like a spa in a bottle. Just add a bit of water to the powder until its a paste and paint it on your face with a fat powder brush. It took out ALL the junk from my pores after I used it today (in conjunction with the mud mask). Love at first facial seriously. :)

Hello! I use seaweed powder for one of my cold process soap recipes. It leaves your skin very soft. My family and customers simply love it. It has a strong low tide smell to it when you mix it in your oil however I use Lemongrass essential oil to perfume my soap (about 3 Oz of it for a 5 pounds batch of soap) and the smell it very invigorating. You still smell the seaweed in the background but it is now compounding with the Lemongrass to give an attractive smell. When you mix it with your oil it turns to a pale shade of green, like avocado flesh. However after the gelling phase of the cold process it will turn a very dark, almost black green. You can make interesting swirls by keeping 1/3 of the batch before adding the seaweed and instead adding color. It tried with the emerald color, but it turned out to dark and hard to differentiate from the rest. Neon green or even neon yellow will give a very nice contrast

How could you not include seaweed into your skin care routine? It has nutrients and minerals and even has a slimming/toning effect on cellulite, not that I have any... who am I kidding?!
