Product Rating: 4.1/5 (As per 16 Customer Reviews)
Botanical Name: Santalum album
Plant Part: Wood
Extraction Method: Steam Distilled
Description: Sandalwood is an evergreen, parasitic tree that burrows its roots into other trees and it can grow up to 9 meters (30 feet) high and has a brown-gray trunk, many smooth slender branches, leathery leaves and small pink-purple flowers. It can take thirty to sixty years for a tree to reach full maturity. That is when it can be harvested and distilled.
Color: Colorless to pale yellow clear thick liquid.
Common Uses: Sandalwood East Indian Essential Oil is used by aromatherapists to create a sense of harmony of body and mind. It also has historical applications as an aid in meditation for religious ceremonies. Sandalwood East Indian is believed to create an exotic, sensual mood with a reputation as an aphrodisiac. It also has extensive uses in the perfume industry as a fixative, and use in body care products for the fragrance it provides.
Aromatic Scent: Sandalwood East Indian Essential Oil has a rich, balsamic, sweet fragrance with delicate wood notes that add to it's reputation as a luxurious and exquisite oil.
History: The documented use of Sandalwood goes back 4000 years to India, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Many temples and structures were built from Sandalwood and the Egyptians used it in embalming. This practice has steadily decreased to the point where Sandalwood East Indian is now only being used for the distillation of oil. The largest reason for this is the over-harvesting of the tree coupled with the 30 year period required for the regeneration. As with all of our oils, we acquire our oils ethically from the Mysore Region. In this case it is through State sponsored auctions in India.
Cautions: Sandalwood East Indian Essential Oil is considered non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitizing oil.

Rating: As another customer noted the scent was weak and barely perceptible. I couldn't smell it at all. I shook the bottle , put some on my wrist and then put a few drops in the diffuser. The rest of my order was fine. I tried again and still couldn't smell anything. I sent an email a month ago and got a reply asking which product I purchased. I replied and still haven't heard back. At $28, I expect replacement or refund.
New Directions Aromatics Response:
Thank you for your feedback, Claire. These 3% dilutions are not intended for scent purposes but rather for therapeutic use and are mostly preferred by Massage Therapists for their clients. If you prefer a stronger Sandalwood scent, you can purchase one of our Sandalwood oils to dilute it with the Sandalwood 3% dilution that you have. We encourage you to please speak with our Customer Service Supervisor to further investigate your concerns. We look forward to the opportunity to provide you with our quality products and services in the future. Have a great day!

Rating: Aroma is true Sandalwood but so diluted barely detectable.
Rating: I was not sure what to expect with this dilution since the reviews were mixed, so I ordered a small bottle to see for myself. I am very happy with the scent, I put 2 drops on the back of my hand and could smell the sandalwood very well, and it smells wonderful! I will definitely purchase again, and a larger size.
Rating: I love this scent and although it is light it does come out on the skin enough to really enjoy without the cost of the straight oil.

Rating: SUMMARY: NOT WORTH IT. After all the positive reviews, I sent off for the 3% sandalwood. I have an excellent nose. What I received had such a faint smell that it was almost undetectable. I could hardly smell it even if I applied it directly under my nostrils. Either I got a poorly mixed batch or 3% is simply inadequate, given the quality of the oil New Directions acquired. In either case, I feel gypped (by the way, the 3% Melissa Leaf was very effective).
Rating: LOVE this! I OWN pure sandalwood & could not be MORE happier!

Rating: If you want to buy a true sandalwood on this site for the therapeutic benefits + scent and not just the latter, then I'd highly recommend getting this one, because even though it's diluted, I find that the scent still seems as strong as the essential oil of the same name, yet the price is WAY better. I also prefer the scent of this one to the African variety, though that one may be more therapeutic, since it's undiluted.

Rating: When I first opened the bottle I smelled absolutely nothing. I hate to say it, but I sniffed to the point of almost stuffing the bottle in my nose to no avail. Finally, after worrying that I may have mistakenly received a bottle of Jojoba oil without any Sandalwood in it, I got my first whiff after placing a drop in my hand. The smell is subtle, but very much a true Sandalwood. Earthy, woody, warm and exotic are the only way to describe it. For the price, this is a great product. However, I am giving it four stars because, like the reviewer below me, I feel it is simply too diluted.

Rating: Barely there, unfortunately - a true sandalwood aroma, but unlike the vanilla and jasmine dilutions, this oil is not sufficiently powerful to work well at such a low strength. I might try a 10% dilution if they sold one.
Rating: I usually find Sandalwood to strong. I only bought this to use in a few blends hoping it would mellow out. But I was really suprised how wonderful this smells. It is not overwhelming but it is not so light you can't smell it. Its a wonderful smell. I love this. I will use this everytime.

Rating: Hmmm... Sandalwood evokes a sensual atmosphere with its rich and exotic aroma. I am using this EO in a perfume blend of mine and it adds a grounding and earthy element to the sweet florals which is to die for! I don't know the difference between Egyptian and East Indian Sandalwood, but at 3% dilution this was definitely a wise choice to make before I splurge on the full strength Sandalwood! None of the EOs I have bought from NDA has disappointed me in the slightest, including this one. Bravo!

Rating: A beautiful oil for a wonderful price! This oil is of the highest quality I've ever used. Everything about this oil is vastly superior to other types-and brands-of sandalwood oil.
Rating: Thank you New Directions for offering such a great price on this wonderful Sandalwood 3% dilution for those of us who would like to try the properties of such a marvelous essential oil without having to purchase the very expensive full strength version. Excellent rating and highly recommended.
