Product Abstract: Some thirty species of sandalwood occur throughout Asia, Australia and the Pacific region, six of which are native to Australia. This species is presently harvested in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, under strict controls. The evergreen is parasitic, burrowing its roots into nearby trees to gain sustenance for the first seven years, leaving the other to die. To produce oil this tree must be over 30 years old, preferably around 40-50 years when it has reached its peak for oil production. The high value of the wood and the oil has led to a steady decline of native sandalwood trees thus increasing efforts to establish plantations. New Directions Aromatics sources the oil by ethical means, which includes state-sponsored auctions. Sandalwood originally comes from the Sanskrit word candanam, borrowed by the Greeks as sandanon. The documented use of Sandalwood goes back 4000 years to India, Egypt, Greece and Rome when many temples and structures were built with it. Because of over-harvesting, this practice has steadily decreased to the point where Sandalwood is now only used for its oil.

Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

I just got my Australian sandalwood EO and have been wearing it all day on my wrist. It is longlasting and the closest smell to my mother's 50 year old Chinese fan. Because I have not found an exact fragrance match, I wonder if the fan is aloeswood instead. Can anyone tell me how many drops are in the 1/2 oz container? This is my 1st time playing with this expensive EO. How many drops with 4 oz. Body butter recommended? Do I really need a carrier oil?

the australian is GOOD even at 10% dilution I found after a couple of weeks the dilution 'gained strength'. Mixed with rose (5 - 15%) its absolutely wonderful.

This is the only sandalwood I will ever buy. The ecological and social impacts of Indian Sandalwood are just not worth it to me. This is a nice fragrant oil, and while it is not as strong as the Indian stuff, it is still quite lovely, and comes with a much cleaner conscience.

I love your Sandalwood Australian EO! It's a Biblical Oil and worth it's weight in gold. A diffenet "must have on hand" EO. It's been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine. I love it's antitumoral, antiviral properties and it's immune boosting properties as well. I blend it in my shea butter salves. It's so healing for the skin and men along with women love it's smell. Thank you for making it available and so affordable.

I've purchased this oil on several occassions from NDA as a substitute for Mysore in my blends and have been very pleased with the results. Mysore Sandalwood has a creaminess to it where as the Australian species has a slight sharpness but please do not let this deter you from trying this wonderful oil. I am very happy that NDA has provided options that are more environmentally friendly and a little easier on the wallet.

I really love this oil. I actually prefer it to the Mysore sandalwood. Wonderful soft scent, I use this for anything: skincare, massage, diffuser blends, etc. Makes a wonderful base note for blending. And considering it is much less expensive than the Mysore, I rarely use the Mysore oil anymore.

For the aromatherapist who can not afford the Mysore variety from India, this is almost as nice, but not all the same qualities that the Mysore carries. I still LOVE the scent and it's 'almost' as good. But nothing can compare to the only Mysore. That said, can still be used for an aphrodisiac, barber's rash, bronchitis, calluses, chapped & cracked skin, depression, headache, incense, insomnia, meditation, moisturiser, nausea, spiritual growth, stress related complaints, ulcers. This one is top notch quality and good price.
