Botanical Name: Valeriana wallichi

Plant Part: Root

Origin: India

Processing Method: Steam Distillation

Description / Color / Consistency: A viscous olive or reddish to brown liquid.

Aromatic Summary / Note / Strength of Aroma: A base note with a medium aroma, Valerian Root Essential Oil has a deep, earthy, slightly woody scent.

Blends With: Patchouli, Pine, Lavender, Cedarwood, Mandarin, Petitgrain and Rosemary.

Product Abstract: A single flowering stem rises of up to four feet rises from the root. Its leaves are lancet-shaped, and it has small fleshy pink flowers with a peculiar scent. Valerian is native to Europe, North America, and the northern part of Asia. Altogether, the genus contains about 150 different species that are widely distributed throughout temperate zones. Both the root and the rhizome are highly prized. The major chemical constituents of Valerian have only fairly recently been identified as a sesquiterpene grouping of bicyclo[8, 1, 0] 5β-hydroxyl-7β-acetoxyl-5α,11, 11′-trimethyl-E-1(10)-ene-4α, 15-olide [Briq, 2006]. Valerian Root is believed to be a suitable replacement for catnip based on similar chemical components.

Cautions: Dilute before use; for external use only. May cause skin irritation in some individuals; a skin test is recommended prior to use. Contact with eyes should be avoided.

Storage: It is recommended that oils packaged in metal containers (for safe shipping) be transferred into dark glass containers to maintain freshness and attain maximum shelf life.

I made a blend of this valerian, rue and lavender for a knock-you-out sleep aid. Valerian has a pungent odor, and when combined with rue's musty smell, the fragrance stinks to high-heaven... but the three combined work like magic to help us fall asleep and stay asleep. I make a rollerball and use it "neat" under pillows -- or on the bottom of feet, for those who can't tolerate the smell but love the affects! Five stars because it works for what we want AND because I know that any valerian worth its salt is going to be stinky!

This valerian is only ok because of the smell and color. I do appreciate the price point but I would love it if the smell were more pleasant. I do think it offers a more calm and soothed state I just wish it didn’t smell like stinky socks!

I bought this product in order to include it into a blend that would induce deep relaxation and healing sleep for both my husband and youngest daughter. The resulting blend was applied a couple of times, but the scent of it was so overwhelming as to prevent anyone from objectively concluding if it worked as intended. This product absolutely reeked! In all fairness, I didn't even try to find a blend that would somehow mitigate its stench. I ended up moving the rest of it into the garbage, as the smell of it would not stay in the bottle once it was opened. I intend to give it another try at some future date, as I really believe in its effects on inducing quality sleep.

To Lauretta in San Diego and to all of you who want to know a lot more about buying valarian root oil than you can find easily online on your own. I've been buying valerian root oil from New Direction for many years, to create my company's insomnia / sleep synergy blend, Deep Sleep (R). What that means to you is that I've been shopping for and reading about and geting samples of valerian root oil from all over the world for ten plus years. Whether or not it's actually sweet smelling, which New Directions valerian root is not -- not really -- and yes, teh scent is quite strong -- depends almost entirely on the color. The lighter, paler yellow it is, the sweeter smelling it is. And yes, valerian root oil can be quite sweet smelling. Light yellow is the top of the line, which I can only obtain by buying it in relatively large quantities -- a liter minimum -- directly from a distiller in India, while paying a substial fee for shipping. Since the shelf life is only about two years, buying more than I need, based on the high cost of shipping, is not all that cost effective. Reversely, the darker it gets, the more offensive the odor, until the most inferior of them all, which is very dark brown, quite thick and very sticky, smells like rotting garbage. New Directions valerian root oil is obviously not at the top of the range, since it's not pale yellow. Nor it is in the mid range, since it's light brown. Based on it's color and consistency -- light brown and thin -- and it's odor -- which is nether very sweet nor offensive -- for me, it is somewhere in between. All things considered, if I were to give it a grade, based on color and consistency, but not price, I'd give it a B to a B minus. I still buy valerian root oil from NDA so that I can buy as much or as little as I need at an affordable price with fast delivery. I hope that helps.

WHOA!!! This stuff smells STRONG!!!! I definitely wouldn't characterize it as slightly sweet. In fact, to me it smells exactly like socks that have been worn too long with old tennis shoes. I tried diluting it, and that actually didn't seem to help too much. In fact, it made the entire drawer I put the bottle of diluted oil in smell like dirty socks! Every time I open the drawer, I get a whiff of it, so I keep that drawer closed!! That said, my cats LOVE it. Apparently, valerian root has a similar effect on them to catnip, although oddly enough, they hate the catnip oil I purchased from this site. All that said, I am only talking about the actual aroma of this oil and not its therapeutic properties, which are well reputed. However, you have to get past its smell to benefit from those properties. I did mix this with several other oils to make a cleanser, and then it didn't smell too bad, but this oil's scent still stood out to me and annoyed me enough that I threw most of that mixture away.
